Well, I was just supposed to go to get a 3D ultrasound. We were not expecting anything wrong at all, even though my blood sugars are still a little out of whack ( Read more... )

one of my best friends just went through this, i think she was around 22 weeks when they first noticed it. they monitored it throughout the next couple of months and eventually the brain development evened out and his ventricles were of normal size.. she hasn't delivered yet (one week away!) but her doctor is convinced that her baby will be perfectly fine.

The interresting thing is that they just noticed it now, when I am 33w+. I know that this does make a difference.

My sister in law has just been scheduled to deliver her son on 3/20 - he has ventriculomegaly, which was caused by exposure to CMV in the early part of her pregnancy. I will keep you in mind and let you know how my nephew is at birth.

Have you had an amnio? That could rule in/our spina bifida and Downs and possibly ease your mind a little.

I'm really sorry, I know how this has affected our family and so I feel for you very deeply. There is still a chance your baby will be ok. I have read that mild, isolated ventriculomegaly can still have a normal prognosis, or only mild cases of learning disabilities.

He did bring up the amnio, but I decided against it because of how far along I am (~33 1/2 weeks). He said that I have a higher risk of having the baby now if I were to do it. He is ordering some blood tests to see if maybe an infection is causing it.

I am just wondering why they are catching it now, since this is normally caught in the second trimester.

The fact that they're just finding it now actually could mean that there are no other problems - and that's a good thing. The only reason my SIL found out about her baby was because he had bright bowels on his 20-week scan and so they ordered an amnio and found the virus that caused it - then she began having weekly scans and that's when they found the ventriculomegaly.

The tough thing is that they can't predict what complications he might have - they have to wait until after he's born. He's being born at 37 weeks. I think if your doctors were that worried about your baby, they'd bring you in early for a c-section. If the baby's growth is on track, and this is the only thing that appears abnormal, there is still a chance your baby will be normal.

Let us know how your tests come back ... I will keep you in my prayers.

He said I don't have any indicators for a C-Section right now, but because of the GD they "might" induce me at 38 or 39 weeks. So far, it is just a small possibility though because the baby is only measuring about 3 days bigger than she should. She was 5lbs 2oz on the scan.

I will let everyone know when I know something more. I have another scan at 36 weeks.

Thank you. We are keeping our hopes up that nothing else is wrong with the baby. So far, so good.

I work with children with special needs, but I don't know much about the pre-natal causes or indicators of their conditions. I just wanted to tell you I'm sending wellness waves your way, and I hope you'll keep us posted.

Hey - I came back to find this thread so I'd be replying to the right person. My new nephew - the one with ventriculomegaly - was delivered today by emergency c-section. He appeared to have stopped growing and so they decided to bring him early (36w5d). He's only been born for a couple of hours so far, but at this moment he seems fine. He's a little small - 5lb 6oz - but not dangerously so, and is not on any kinds of machines or anything.

Of course since ventriculomegaly can cause neurological complications, there's a possibility we won't see the effects of it for a while. But so far it seems like he might just be ok.

I haven't noticed any recent updates from you - how are you doing?
