HOW IT WORKS
Week 1: The theme for the round is decided and announced. The sign-up list is presented, and people can sign up to be recommenders. In their comment, they will include a list of five titles that match the theme, including one book that can be accessed online for free. (See list below.) Comments will be screened so that no one feels obliged to avoid recommending books that have been already recommended by others.
By default, if you recommend for a theme, you'll also be expected to read for it. "Reading for a theme" implies that you will receive a recommendation list, attempt to finish at least one book on the list (although completion is not required) and make a post about your reaction to the book in the week before the discussion period begins. You can also sign up to "pinch hit" if you're willing to commit to read for a theme but don't have a list of recommendations.
The recommendation lists are emailed to the readers; match-ups will try to match the readers'
profiles. The full list of all recommended books is also posted after the lists are sent out. Members of the club who did not sign up to recommend are free to read any of the titles on the list and post about them as well.
Weeks 2-5: Readers are given four weeks (i.e. about a month) to read at least one book from the list their given. In Week 5, the last week before the discussion, they will post to the community with their thoughts on the book. All posts to the community are moderated during this time to avoid spoilers. They can also post on their own journals (or blogs) and link to their entry from the community journal. Readers will need to make at least one post during Week 5 that at least includes a brief introduction to the book and their thoughts on it. Although they are not obliged to finish the book, they should read enough to be able to discuss it in detail.
Posts do not necessarily have to be a detailed review of the book; you can simply write about the experience of finding the book and reading it. You are also welcome to include links to other reviews, construct reading guides, and write critical analyses, if they wish. Posting about more than one book on the list you received is fine too: the more the merrier.
If you didn't sign up but decide later to read a book, you're free to post during Week 5 as well. (The only difference is that you're not actually obliged to make at least one post.)
Week 6: All posts made to the community journal are unlocked. There will be a post with links to all posts and a few theme-related questions to start off discussion.
Please feel free to leave any questions as comments to this post. Suggestions for improvement are also welcome since the book club is very much an evolving project and will likely undergo changes to suit the interests of the community.
