Flack never says no to Thanksgiving. Ever. Ever.

This, however, is the first year he's actually done cooking for one. This is the instance where a Rift power like his comes in handy, and no Thanksgiving dinner is complete without a green bean casserole. He added his contribution to the buffet line of foods brought by the other guests, and turns to survey the rest of the room. He isn't sure where to mingle first, but he'll figure it out.

Martha steps up to Flack, noticing that he's set something on the buffet line. However, she does not notice what it is that he's set there. It's something to question.

She smiles as she steps up to him.

"I had no idea you could cook," she comments with a small smile that widens a bit, and she has a glass of her alcoholic cider in hand. "So what is it that you made?"

"Greenbean casserole," he says as he turns back to her with a smile. "Nothing fancy but I wanted to contribute something. And the cooking is more of a recent thing."

He's always wanted to learn, but Chicago is the first place where he actually had the time. That plus his Rift ability has added to more than a few experiments over the course of the past couple months.

"Hey, you've got one up on me. I've no idea how to make green bean casserole, and your contribution is appreciated, believe me," Martha says with a small smile as she lifts her drink up in his direction.

She glances down at the item on the buffet line as her smile widens. "I'm something of a terrible cook, took me ages to learn how to make passable pancakes. It's why I made the apple cider, minimal cooking involved."

He chuckles. "I was never bad at cooking -- I just didn't really have time to do it. Find yourself in another universe and out of a job, and you find the time to pick up a few things."

He then glances down in the direction of the cider, before heading over to pick up a glass himself. "Though I will never say no to a good cider."

"That'll do it. Can I use that reasoning? I never had time to cook in college, and there wasn't exactly the money for it, and then I couldn't cook as an intern." Then she spent a year flying around the universe within space and time. "It's not a bad thing. To have to learn to cook."

Martha grins as she heads over that way. "If you did say no to it, you'd be bloody crazy." She will wait on baited breath to hear his response to the cider.

"Nah, it's not. And it's not for everyone. But it's never a bad thing to want to try either."

He pours himself a cup of cider, inhaling a bit as he brought it to his lips, before taking a sip. He lets the flavor sit on his tongue for a moment, feeling his Rift ability kick in and start to pick it apart, but he pushes that to the back of his mind for a moment. He just wants to enjoy it, for now. "Especially when it tastes like this. Nice job, Doctor Jones."

"Certainly not. It's helpful to be able to cook in general for multiple reasons, but it's not exactly my forte," Martha says with a laugh, and she's capable of admitting it too.

Really, she is! She smiles at his reaction, nodding in response to him. "You are quite welcome. It's my pleasure to make it, and the party was in sore need of some cider, not necessarily the alcoholic kind but it is my favorite."

He nods a bit at that. "Well, if you ever want me to cook for you -- I'd be happy to do it." Having friends to cook for was always better than just cooking for yourself all the time -- at least in his opinion.

Then he smirks. "Who knows? By the end of the night, we might be needing the kick."

"...I would actually love that. I am frequently in need of food and rarely have the time and as I said before, ability to cook," Martha says with a small smile at the thought. She would love it if he could cook anything for her. She really isn't picky when it comes to the food.

Martha laughs. "That's what I thought. It isn't as though Chicago doesn't require a kick more often than not."

He smiles a little wider at that, before nodding. "Anytime. Say the word, and I'll whip something up." It's been a long time since he's gotten the chance to show off, but he's not going to say that out loud, naturally.

"This is true. But sometimes it's really good." And in those instances, they drink to celebrate. Either way, alcohol is a fact of life.

"I'll hold you to that now. Just to warn you. You might regret that offer," Martha says with a laugh, and she will. She'll simply write him a journal entry one day, and she will likely be very impressed no matter what.

"Yes, it is very, very good. I've had more to drink here than I think I did in my whole life before I arrived here." And she went through med school before she fell through.

"I think the Rift just has that effect on people," he says with a shrug. "The facts of life suddenly become a little bit harder when you could disappear tomorrow."

Or when you have to adjust to the fact that you may never see your friends again.

"It's incredibly true, sadly," Martha says as she shakes her head. "I've seen it time and time again. People who weren't drinkers become drinkers shortly after falling through."

It can only be expected.

He shrugs. "So long as you keep it handled, it's not too bad. It's taking it too far that's the problem."
