Neal is not entirely sure why he thought coming would be a good idea.
Well no, he thought about coming because it was a party and eh was bored and sometimes it's just nice to be around happy people and birthdays can usually provide such things. So he talked to Peter, who had decided to skip out on the party itself, and come hang out.
He brought desert though!
He couldn't figure out what sort of food to bring with him, so he just prepared an array of deserts, from cupcakes to eclairs, to truffles to a few doughnuts he picked up because he didn't want to deal with frying anything.
Dropping the try off somewhere it looks like it will get appreciated, he settles into a corner, more intent on people watching than interacting with anyone but he'll happily say hello of someone wants to chat.
Sara long since got over the idea of being a party crasher.
Granted, normally it was done for the sake of her job, but in this instance, it could come in handy as well. Besides, this seems like a good opportunity to make some friends, and she'd be the first to admit that after falling through the Rift, she is desperately in need of some of those. So when there's a birthday party advertised on that journal thing, and it's listed as open to all, she figures it couldn't hurt.
However, just because she's there to make friends doesn't mean that she's not happy to see a familiar face when there is one. When she spots Neal sitting off in the corner, she makes her way over with a bit of a smile.
"I take it you're responsible for the dessert cart?"
"I think I've been on a low level sugar rush for the past two days," he informs with a wide grin. "It was worth it though. Besides I couldn't come empty handed."
And everyone loves sweets, especially at a birthday party.
He scoots over a little, leaving her some room. He was going to maybe try and socialize when a few other people arrived but he is also perfectly content to let Sara take up his attention for a while.
"I didn't know I'd actually be seeing you here, I would have said we could go together."
Sara moves to sit on the bench next to him, settling back and just taking a look around the park. Say what you want about Neal, but he definitely knows the right angle to look at something when you want to see everything.
"It was a last minute decision. I don't know the birthday girl, but I figure -- might as well get out in public if I'm stuck here."
It's a gift. Besides, if he's not going to actively socialize, he's going to get a very good view.
"You too?" He laughs. "I don't even know what she looks like, though I'm hoping we'll be able to pick her out in the crowd." It looks like the kid of party where they'll be making a big fuss around the person who it's for.
Sara is lucky that she isn't catching Neal when he's rocketing between 'relatively harmless' and 'breaking the law on several levels'. He's been doing a bit of both since he's gotten to Chicago. Well, almost both. He's been setting things up to do the latter.
"True," he agrees, then laughs a little. "You know, we could just ask someone. It'd be less interesting but we could."
She smirks as she settles in more, scanning the area of the park. "So the party itself was thrown by the hot dog guy, right?" She gestures over to Shawn, who is having a rather animated conversation with someone about -- what is most likely nothing at all.
"Okay, so if he's the one throwing the party, he obviously must know the birthday girl. That should help narrow things down at least a little bit."
If they watch Shawn, it might just get them what they want. Sara could work with that. However, that is also the equivalent of jumping to the end of the book to check their answer. So technically it could be cheating.
"Yeah but you have to admit, that's kind of taking the easy way out."
He looks around, studying the other people who seem to be around. "How about this. We pick two other people besides the hot dog guy, place our bets on which one runs into the birthday girl first and use him to figure out who she is?"
She pauses as she searches the faces quietly, trying to determine which person stood the best bet. Then she turns and points to where Randall and Sophie are standing across the way.

It's almost like a game. She could use a game, right about now.

He likes the idea of a game. A game would be something to do and y'know, it's not as if they have anything better to occupy themselves right now.
"Do you think you can play twenty questions if neither of you know what you're guessing?"
Reply
"I think so long as we get an answer, it doesn't really matter."

He studies Shawn for a moment, then looks to the car. "I think so? That's the guy who I talked to anyway. I don't know anything about him though."

"Tall guy, two o'clock."

Then he gets up and walks over and starts walking over to Anne to introduce himself and ask her to go find Veronica as soon as she can.
Hey, there were never any rules set up.

If there is anything that Neal should have already known, it is that Sara doesn't lose easily. If ever.
