If I built a wall a hundred feet tall...

Jacob Hobbes stands outside of the Main Gauche with a backpack against his ankle, leaning against a pole. He's not so sure about this place. It's not like any building that he's seen before. He heard from someone or another that it was a place for supernatural sort to live who didn't have a problem with demons. Jacob hasn't met many demons so he ( Read more... )

Nagi's bitchiness level isn't all that high at the moment. It generally improves the moment he gets off the bus in front of the Gauche, but today was the first day of Summer School. And he's stuck taking English. And only English, because he needs a years worth of credits to be mostly caught up.

And there's a guy staring at the gates. Well then.

"Why don't you take a picture of the place? It'll last longer."

Jacob turns toward the kid when he's spoken to, and then he smirks and shrugs his shoulders.

"I would, but I'm fresh out of cameras." He holds up his hands to show that they are, indeed, free of any cameras. "I figured burning the image on to my retina might work just as well, but it turned out to be more difficult than I thought. You wouldn't happen to know how I can go about living here, would you? I know it's not your average apartment complex."

"Yeah. It's full of freaks." Nagi rolls his eyes. He's quite aware that he's a freak himself.

"You just stand here looking sad until someone decides you're pathetic enough to let in." It worked for Nagi! Although it's probably not the recommended method.

"Sounds like my kind of place," Jacob says, assuming the freaks aren't like the bastard that taught him all he knows about using his power.

He figures freaks are like people. There are good eggs. There are bad eggs. And then there's everyone in the middle. The average eggs.

...This egg metaphor is not working out for him.

"Seriously, man? Cause I don't do the whole looking pathetic thing. I can't. Look at me. It's impossible." Jacob is completely not serious, which is obvious by the smile on his face. "I'm more the stare at a building until a new entrance appears sort of guy."

Soul is on his way back to the Gauche, and is looking rather grim. School's finally out, which means he and Maka are finally away from all the asshole students, but nothing really seems to have changed. He's also just in kind of a bad mood.

He spots the new guy lurking--okay, no, he tells himself, the guy isn't lurking, he's just standing--outside the Gauche and he raises an eyebrow, coming to a stop and peering at the guy. He hasn't seen him around the Gauche before, though it's not like Soul knows everyone. He pulls out his keycard and walks up to the door, looking over at the lurking--standing--guy.

"Lost your key?"

"Not exactly," Jacob answers, pushing himself off of the pole and glancing at the door. "Never had one. Wondering if this is the type of place I want to live. I've heard about it. Heard that it's for not normal people. I thought if I looked at it long enough I'd be struck by an epiphany that told me what I should do. No luck so far."

He glances at the walls of the gate.

"Do you like living here?"

Soul grins, showing his shark-like teeth. "No, not a normal one among us. Though I'd recommend it if you don't have a problem with Wanderers and demons, and want a place that could stand up to a nuclear war."

He considers the question, tilting his head and frowning a little. "Depends what you mean by 'like.' It's nice enough for a home several dimensions away from home, I guess. The people are cool. It's safe, it's free, it's got everything you could need." Soul sighs and shrugs. "Still several dimensions away from home, though."

Bitterness and resignation are starting to make Soul not even care about who finds out that he's a Wanderer. He doesn't exactly look normal, so what's the point of acting normal?

"I don't have a problem with either, but I've never had much experience with either, too. I sure as hell don't want a nuclear war tearing down the place I live so I guess that's two points for the Gauche."

Jacob figures now is as good a time as any to start getting to know Wanderers and demons, because he doesn't fit in with humans. It's time to stop pretending like he can ignore who he is or split himself into two people like he did growing up.

"I'm far away from home myself, man, but that was mostly by choice, and there's not much difference between Chicago and St. Lois." Jacob nods, and then frowns, too. "So you're a Wanderer? I've probably met more of you, but I've got no way of telling the difference. I'm Jacob. Elemental."
