He eyes Topher from further down the sidewalk in Romeo's creepy, vampire way of eyeing people. Yeah, talking is overrated, but freaking others out by staring at them? Why not? He's bored.

It's the smell he notices. Not that Romeo smells bad or anything, just that it's a new smell, and not in the different-cologne kind of way. It's a smell that Topher's brain says he should pay attention to, but not in a fight-or-flight way. At least not completely.
That is what makes Topher actually look around to see what the source might be. Of course, by the time he actually spots Romeo, he's gotten pretty close, and he hasn't quite connected the smell with the person, so he just gives Romeo a friendly smile and keeps walking.
...and considers finding a good place to cross the street, because he might be a bit of a doofus, but he doesn't really want to get mugged or something.

Romeo raises his eyebrows at Topher at the friendly smile. He could tell by the expression on his face that he had sensed something new.
"You're not very good, are you? Or not very experienced," he says before Topher can get too far away. "I suppose it makes little difference either way."
