That was a pretty sweet day...

What is that? That, out there, onthewingoftheplane? Could it be? Is such a thing possible?

Could some people actually be having a good day in Chicago?

Chance Adams is sitting on top of her sweatshirt in an alleyway, the back of her t-shirt rolled up behind her neck, smiling gaily. She looks like a mess, having lived on the streets for a while ( Read more... )

Katja is also having a good day. Sure, maybe her team didn't do as well as she might have liked, but she had a good night at the bar anyway and found a new Mark. And spent the next couple days in her laboratory making up neat little annoying things to inflict on him without actually killing him outright.

She's actually splashing around in the fountain, nudging pennies and dimes around with her toes, when she sees Vaughn running by. And kicks some water at him on a whim. Acting one's age is for humans, because they don't live to be a hundred and fourteen years old.

Vaughn freezes when he's splashed, stands there for a full minute with the water dripping off his nose and glances at Katja.

"Hello?" he asks, because wow. What a wake-up call. It's cold. He rubs the water off his nose with his hand. He's not angry, or irritated. Just confused as hell.

"That's pretty cold," he says slowly.

Oh Vaughn. You're so awkward.

Katja grins at him around her cigarette, which has the effect of making the grin incredibly lopsided. Then she transfers the handful of skirt in her left hand to the right hand, and takes the cigarette out of her mouth. One cannot smoke and rattle off someone's head at the same time, though if there's anyone who'd figure out a way, it's Katja.

"Well, щенок, when one runs within the radius of my corner of the fountain, one takes his risks and gets the consequences," she says.

Vaughn grimaces a little at the nickname. Really? Really? He's just met this woman, and already she's giving him a pet name.

"I apologize for tromping through your domain," he says with one eyebrow raised at her, and then a devilish look crosses his face, because it's just SUCH a nice day. He reaches into the fountain and attempts to splash Katja right back.

Huck's also near the bus bench, leaning on the bus stop sign, though she's actually waiting for the bus. She was considering walking home, but she's tired and she's got the money for the bus, for once, so she figures she might as well take it to the stop near her place anyway.

Now, though, she's staring at Scout. "Helps t'get th'food in yer mouth when yer eatin'," she says. She more amused than anything.

Scout glances up at Huck, her tongue half-hanging out of her mouth as she tries to wrap it around the popsicle. She looks confused for a minute, and manages to totally miss her mouth in the meantime, wiping the cold red ice down the side of her cheek. Startled by the cold, she pulls it away and stares at it, then looks back at Huck.

"Does," she nods to Huck a little bit. "Sometimes. Om. Nom. Nom." She licks the popsicle finally, then sticks the fingers of her right hand in her mouth, brandishing the popsicle at Huck with her left.

"Wanna?" she asks, tilting the popsicle towards her in an inviting way.

Dev is also in a good mood. It's a gorgeous day, summer is starting, there haven't been any bombings lately (that he has heard of), Dev still has some money from his kill, and he at long last has a job. He's working as a bookseller at a small indie book store. The people are nice, the selection of books is good, and it's quiet and relaxing. The money is a good perk too.

He has decided to see how things are going at the Conrad--he has developed a very strange sort of attachment to it and the people there--and is walking down the street when he spots Scout. He grins to match her own.

"Scoutbird. Hello, Scoutbird. I was beginning to despair of ever seeing you again."

Scout stops licking her popsicle and instead licks her lips, running them over her teeth and making a happy-snarling face at him.

"Devdev devido," she giggles. "Despair pair pear see bee tree three knee hop on pop. Seeing you again nice thrice twice now and again eh? Long long time." She extends the popsicle at him. "Lick 'o the lollipop top of the mornin' to ya yeah yeah?"

He can't help laughing. Oh how he loves the crazies--they're always so much fun.

"Oh, a long long time, eons, centuries. How have you been, Scoutbird? You seem a happy sort on this fine-fine mornin'."

Jamal has been all over the city and beyond. He takes weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) trips out to Cicero to visit Malek and his whirlpool bathtub. It's not as if it's out of the question for him to wander down the alleyway that Chance happens to be in.

He grins when he sees her.

"Chance!" Jamal runs toward her, and then freezes midway through the alleyway. He hasn't seen her wings before, and he's not sure what to make of them.

Chance looks up from her place on the ground and grins broadly at Jamal. "Jamal!" she says, and then she sees the look on his face.

"Uh, don't worry about them, the wings I mean. They're just..." She tries to shift, then remembers she can't actually get up with her wings in because she'd be too top-heavy, so she just gestures at the ground close to her. "How've you been, buddy?" she asks.

Because acting like nothing's wrong and everything's normal works every time.

"What are they? Why do you have them?" Yeah, he's eight. He's not so easily distracted by normal talk when there are wings out.

Jamal does walk up to her though when she gestures and sits in front of her. He saw someone turn into a dinosaur and someone else turn into a big, angry wolf. It's not like wings are all that frightening in comparison. He likes Chance.

She helped him.

She shrugs awkwardly at him. "They're just wings," she says. "I got 'em a couple of months ago. I don't have 'em out a lot because... they're kind of distracting, you know? Makes it hard to fit in a crowd. But they're a bitch to keep in, so I thought maybe, you know, 'cause people couldn't really see me here..." she shrugs. It's not a big deal, and so long as it doesn't scare him out of his wits, she's going to keep them out for the time being.

Luke steps up to the coffee shop. He's distracted by the girl snapping her teeth at people and downing a smoothie.

He sticks his hands in his pockets and smiles at her.

"How's that taste? Always wanted to get a smoothie, but thought I'd miss the caffeine too much."

Trin turns to fully face him and smiles her biggest, toothiest grin at him.

"It's tasteeeeeeeeeee!" she exclaims. "Like, seriously. I'm kind of in love with caffeine too, but this is just GREAT stuff. Do you like smoothies? How do you eat a baby in a blender? With chips! Or, um, something. Do you know how that joke goes? I was never very good at telling jokes, and I kind of fail at remembering punchlines. Also, I get confused if it's a rabbi, a priest and a Tibeten monk who go into a bar, or a rabbi, a priest and a blonde. Do you know that one too?" She snaps her teeth at him just a little bit. A friendly air-nip, if you will.

Luke grins back at her. Smiles are contagious. Luke is perhaps more susceptible to them than most. He takes a seat at her table without asking if he can, turning it around so he can sit on it backwards and listen to her. Yes, he's actually listening to her rambles.

He smirks at the friendly air-nip. He finds it attractive, which is really nothing new with him.

"Dunno. Haven't had a smoothie in ages. I imagine I'd like it though. Fruity and sugary. 's not a bad combination, yeah?" And then Luke laughs. "Couldn't tell you, I'm afraid. Never was good at telling jokes either. Never had to be."

"Uh, yeah, it's only like the BEST COMBINATION EVER. Except sex and chocolate. Like, seriously, WHO THOUGHT OF THAT SHIT? They should be considered a saint or, uh, more like a prophet, you know? Because HOLY JESUS WOW." She takes a big slurp of her drink and shakes her head like it's the most mind-blowing thing on the planet.

She likes him. He's cute, and he has yet to yell at her for talking too much, which tends to be the first thing that people do to her here in the city. He seems nice.

"Me either, I mean, I'm not very good at anything to tell you the truth, but like you said, never had to be."
