And in the naked light I saw ten thousad people, maybe more

In the Kashtta Tower, The Vesmier is sitting with a prototype psychic amplifier in his hands, carefully tuning himself into it. He's been at it for a few hours now, but the fact that he's doing it in the dining hall by the kitchen means he's not averse to interruption - he just needs to make sure he understands the thing intimately. More than a ( Read more... )

Ianto is currently ensconced in a tiny office of his very own, conveniently located near the kitchen and its coffeemaker. He'd be burying himself in paperwork, if this place had any paperwork for him to do.

Perhaps he should invent some. Paperwork is, after all, a wonderful way to avoid thinking. Particularly when that thinking centers on the slightly-more-absent-than-usual Captain Jack Harkness. He wishes he was able to come up with some sort of brilliant plan, but that's never really been his sort of thing. He's just the one that makes plans happen.

In what may be a first, he'd actually welcome Owen as a distraction.

It's good that, out of the many, many rooms in the Tower, only a few see actual use. Owen's patience for menial tasks like "finding people" and "anything other than fieldwork or medicine" doesn't extend very far.

He pokes his head into the office, taking in the decor - or what passes for decor - and then doing a miniature double-take at Ianto and his goat legs. Of, he's seen him once or twice around the Tower, but those were times when he had other things to think about. Like running off to rescue Tosh. Or finding Sam so a robot could lie to him.

"Ianto." It's like a hello, if you squint and factor Owen into the equation.

"Owen." Ianto looks up, and takes in Owen's expression. Right, the goat legs. He was honestly wondering if Owen would get around to noticing.

Ianto gets up, smoothing the makeshift man-skirt, and makes his way to the door. "So either we've had another development, or you're wondering where the coffee's got to." No, he's not going to say a word about the legs. Or the tail. Or the fact that he's wearing a skirt. But he's waiting for it... Owen being Owen, there's only so long he can be expected to keep his mouth shut about much of anything.

Owen snorts. "Right. Well, with all the grown-ups taking charge and their very sweet time, I doubt we'd be doing anything about new developments even if they did come up. You've seen the robot, right?" He doesn't wait for an answer. He doesn't really care that much. "Looking for a coffee, yeah."

How to phrase this next part... how to phrase this next part...

As he's waiting in the doorway, he motions vaguely to Ianto's legs. "You know I didn't exactly train in the veterinarian sciences," he says. "So if you get any horrible diseases of the hoof, I'm not sure how useful I'll be."

Despite the fact that he works on aliens for a living. hey, usually by the time the aliens get to him they're already dead, and no one's expecting him to cure that.

A little spider-bot scurries up to the Vesmier, settling near his ankle, though not actively disturbing him. Psychically, it's as quiet as possible, but it's displaying a little message.

Everything working all right so far? Attuning going well?

In this state of focused telepathy, it's not hard to notice the spider-bot's approach. Ves takes a moment to pull his attention out of the amplifier so he can turn his attention to the Doctor. The one they actually have safe here.

"Had I known," he begins, "that I would have found myself in a situation in which the only logical recourse available would require me to have an understanding of inorganic psychic interfaces..."

He would have taken a course at the Academy or something. There's not much in Chicago his life as a senatorial aide has prepared him for.

"Still. The basics of function are self-explanatory, and I shall make do with what else I am able to understand. At this rate I'm afraid it will function more as a psychic transmitter than a psychic amplifier, but with good luck, that should be enough."

The spider-bot droops a little.

Oh, come on now, the inorganics are the EASY ones! ...Says the disembodied Time Lord stuck in a watch hooked into a robot. Right. I daresay I've got a bit more experience there, and not much application with getting into someone's mind on a more practical level. But maybe...

Anything in specific giving you trouble, or are all those wonderful little linky-bits not linking?

He's scanning away at the device, and wishing he had a bit less theory and more practice, otherwise he'd be leaving the Vesmier out entirely. It's his problem, after all. Sort of. For a broad definition of 'him'.

The Vesmier exhales, lowering a hand to offer the Doctor a ride up to the table. "So far as I can tell, the device itself is functioning perfectly. But it isn't, in itself, cognizant. Even the Matrix terminals on Gallifrey offered me some form of organic feedback." He shakes his head. "It's simply a new form of interface science to familiarize myself with, and I'm more than aware that any allowance of time, here, comes with heavy price."

HK-47 has overheard some of Master's meatbag friends talking about another mechanical lifeform in the building. And while he isn't actively looking for it, he's still continuing his patrols of the building, particularly when Master's crew isn't around.

He's following some odd energy readings, not recognizing the source. Master will probably not like him not reporting in first, but she gave him no orders to the contrary, so he can live with that. Curiosity isn't just for humans.

CNJ has finished a comprehensive scan of one wall and is moving to a better position for line-of-sight on another when HK-47 comes in, and it turns to register the new (...older) robot. CNJ scans it, the same red box-net of light twisting around HK-47, and playsback the usual audio. {Identified: Torchwood adjunct, HK-47. This unit identifies as Chula Antipersonnel Armour completion ID D1747ч.}

Well now, that's interesting. HK-47 is at least happy to see that this new unit has an appropriately disconcerting appearance, though he is worried that this might be his replacement. How insulting and humiliating that would be!

He takes note of the designation, adding it to the other miscellaneous data collected so far. Further information is necessary before classifying its status in his memory banks, of course. Though he seems to already be known to his fellow mechanoid, which is... mildly concerning. "Query: What is your purpose here? What are your combat specifications?"

Well, CNJ isn't going to be a threat to HK-47's authority, whatever that may happen to be. He reads off the information requested - hey, HK-47 is clasified Torchwood. There are rules.
