[There's a long moment of silence before the sound of a page turning can be heard. Only then does a voice come on. That of a boy.]

Why is disease and death feared? These are part of life and always come.

[Another pause before he speaks again.]

We all will fade.

Some people worry about life ending before the do everything they want to.

[He looks up from the book he's reading.]

Life will end whether they wish it to or not.

True and sometimes sooner than they think.

Fear seems pointless.

It's because no one wants to lose someone that they care about. When someone is sick it's natural to worry about them and hope that they get better, and when they die people miss them because they care. Even if it's inevitable it's still painful to lose anyone.

Of course, that's why whenever someone leaves you tell them things like 'take care' or 'be safe' and you always welcome them home when they return. It's also why you burn incense in memory of someone or why we have funerals, they're as much to help those who are still here to cope as they are for the spirits that have passed on.

I thought that was mere tradition.

Not everyone fades.

I am free of disease and age, because it is the destiny of all Astartes to die in battle.

Then you will die in combat.

And that is why we know no fear. Our stories are already told from the moment we take on the black Carapace. All that remains is glory and honor.

Because it makes people sad when people get ill or die. Right?

Then that's why people don't like it. I know I wouldn't.

It is just death and disease.
