[There's a long moment of silence before the sound of a page turning can be heard. Only then does a voice come on. That of a boy.]

Why is disease and death feared? These are part of life and always come.

[Another pause before he speaks again.]

We all will fade.

It's because no one wants to lose someone that they care about. When someone is sick it's natural to worry about them and hope that they get better, and when they die people miss them because they care. Even if it's inevitable it's still painful to lose anyone.

Is it?

Of course, that's why whenever someone leaves you tell them things like 'take care' or 'be safe' and you always welcome them home when they return. It's also why you burn incense in memory of someone or why we have funerals, they're as much to help those who are still here to cope as they are for the spirits that have passed on.

I thought that was mere tradition.

No, or at least for me it isn't. I know anytime that I say it to Hokuto-chan or Seishirou-san I mean it.

Then they are dead.

[Subaru flails for a moment.] N-no, but I always worry when either of them are sick. A-and they always take care of me anytime that I'm ill.

But my job requires me to work closely with those who have lost someone, and with those who have died. It's always heartbreaking to watch someone say goodbye to those that they loved.

I see. You deal with spirits.

[He simply nods for a moment.] I'm an onmyōji, so I deal with a lot of spirits that have lingered behind and have also performed as a medium on several occasions.

And if they do not wish to leave?

Then I try to figure out why they don't. Anytime that a spirit lingers in the living world then it suffers, so I try to help them figure out why they don't want to move on.

Is this a fun job?

At times, though there are also times that I really wish that I could do something else.

I did not know there was something else.

Of course, there are all kind of jobs. I remember I wanted to be a vet when I was younger, but then I learned that you had to dissect animals in veterinary school so I changed it to a zoo keeper. That way I could help take care of the animals without having to do that.

Dissection would show you the inside of the animal.
