so i was reading this really interesting article about lady gaga's ability to be grotesque being related to her being white and thin (and it's really interesting, tbh, i mean as i've said, i love gaga, but the blogger does raise an interesting point-- fat / black / latina / asian / trans women probably would not even come close to getting away with ( Read more... )

*Sigh* This is one of the things that makes me worry about my hopeful acting career... I am still a long way off from my goal size... but my goal size is an 8 (I'm a 12 right now) because I HAVE HIPS. UGH.

yeah, see, that's what i mean. you know you're meant to be an 8, then be a goddamn 8. if you know your target weight / size, shoot for it and own it, and if that's a double digit, fucking rock it. and it's not even about the size, you know, what bugs me isn't that people say kelly clarkson is fat-- although that does obviously bother me-- but like, that someone shaped/sized like her could never put on a latex bodysuit (though god knows why anyone of any size would want to) or a dress made of a polar bear skin and parade around being ridiculous and creepy, just because of her size-- that is ludicrous to me. ugh! *throws up hands*

I think - and this is me thinking Kelly Clarkson is fucking awesome- that she also falls prey to people being asshats b/c a: she's an inbetweeny. She probably wears a size 14, and isn't Beth Ditto sort of large-and-unapologetic, nor is athletic or- and this is my b: 'big' the way Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera are big.

That is to say, she's not an hourglass. She's not the (if only slightly) accepted Hollywood 'fat' norm.

No, girl is pear-shaped like the best of them:

yeah, see, that IS what i look like in skinny jeans-- it's sure as fuck *not* what zooey deschanel looks like in skinny jeans-- they're called thighs, motherfuckers, and i've got them. but like i was saying to ray above, the thing that pisses me off most is the thought, however vocalized it might or might not be, that she had better keep her clothes on and/or not do anything weird or crazy, because it's *already* weird and crazy that *gasp* A FAT GIRL is a celebrity. but yeah. i would love to look like that.

--also, FUCK but i love her clothes. even that crazy dress, she rocks it so hard. XD

and i think the haircut would be cute on you! i like the sidesweep bangs on you a lot, but pinned back would be cute too, and you do have the same curly hair. :"D

Well, I'd be able to do both. Like maybe just pull up what I've got just a little? They're so long right now that I'm tempted to pull all my hair back AND HELLO UNFLATTERING. >.<;

lol I was going to leave right after work to drive, but have descided I'm going to run home as fast as I can and flat iron my hair. >.<;

but cut it up so that it's slightly shorter then my shoulders when dry. Still layered, but curly x123782189. :O

b/c it's so long now that curls are WAY harder to get. D: See also

This is the sort of shit I've put up with most of my life growing up in Korea, where the standards of being "skinny" are even more ridiculous. But it worries me that it's starting to seep into American culture as well :( I mean, obviously people should care about their weight as far as their health is concerned, but it's crazy to set this "ideal" weight for everyone. Even more crazy to make that ideal a size zero :|

I'm smaller up top (no boobs lol) but I wear size 27~28 jeans, which is pretty average (?), but in Korea there's like, no chance in hell I'm going to find nice jeans in my size. I've walked into stores and had clerks tell me that they don't have jeans in my size, right off the bat. KUH RAZY.

.....by size 27/28 do you mean 27/28 inches? because seriously, that *IS* ridiculous-- in inches, i take about a 38; i've never even bothered shopping for designer jeans, because they just don't make them in my size. and yeah, like my best friend says all the time-- she's a size 1 or 2, and we'll go to stores where she's putting on size mediums and going WHAT THE FUCK I AM NOT A MEDIUM, I AM AN EXTRA SMALL. and i'm holding up the x-large and going "....okay this is like a size 8, wtf is that".

mmm, your icon. XDDDDDDDD

Yeah, I mean inches :o (So size 4~6?) I have like ONE pair of designer jeans, but I have to squeeze into them and I'm always scared I'll burst an inseam /o\ So they're my "After you lose ten pounds" jeans lol.

I wonder what size jeans Matt Bomer wears lol XD The guy has RIDICULOUS legs *__* Slim hips and loooooong lean legs. And ugh DAT ASS ♥ (Lolol Matt reduces me to a crude, beer-swilling frat boy idek)

DUDE I KNOW THE FEELING. I guess I had it in more of a slight extreme because I am quite tall for Asian standards (176cms/5'9 ish I think??) and the cheap and awesome local clothes just weren't made in those sizes once I really started getting an ass after puberty. Used to get so insecure from the comments of all the sales ladies and I had this whole phase where I wore mens pants and shoes allll the time, but thankfully at least the fashion scene has become more open now and it is at least easier to find dresses that fit. And I admit that sometimes I go shopping at the (quite cute) "fat stores" and just buy the things and get them altered in by the tailor. And by "fat" I mean a European size 12/14/16, oh man. Shoes I get at the "tranvestite/lady boy stores" lolol but they are adorable and moderately priced though!

The article has a very good point. If she were someone who didn't fit a ridiculous beauty standard already, she wouldn't be able to get away with what she does 'statement' wise, at ALL.

KELLLY. She's so pretty and lovely and honestly? I'd jump into bed with her.

yeah, it's true, like you can't do that shit if people already consider you ugly -- because apparently it's edgy to pretend you're ugly when you're not. *throws up hands*

ikr? like, GUH, she looks like a pinup. the way her one shoe is off, and her collarbones? GUUUUH I SAY.

we talk a lot about privileged image in my LGBTQ class. so the article was certainly relevant to my interests. i still love lady gaga. i can't help it. she's fabulous in that fabulous sort of crazy way. i just want to lick her face.

...

god. don't even get me started on how image has changed the shape of women and the angle of feminism in its current landscape. in the 50s, which is arguably the most restrictive time period for women in recent memory, the average size of a woman was a ten. TEN. DOUBLE DIGETS WERE SEXY. Marilyn Monroe was a size fourteen. BACK THEN. with the sizes getting smaller and smaller, it doesn't surprise me that she would be a size SIXTEEN if she were alive today.

right? *headsdesk*

Not to mention our ability, as non celebs to criticize everything about them, when we would never say anything like that to a stranger on the street or a friend; "Hey, Katie- lookin' obese today. Loose some fucking weight."

oh fail america.

i love gaga too, i think she's batshit crazy but i love her music and i think she really is a fascinating person. and TBH the issues that this article addresses, for me, aren't even about her, but about the way people talk about her. she *is* able to do this shit b/c she's white and skinny-- but she's DOING it, she's not making herself another britney or another christina or another ANYONE. she's a free bitch, baby, and she does exactly what she wants and i like that about her.

but yes, of course, the celebrity / non celebrity thing is terrible, and totally unfair. they're held to an impossible standard to the point where they have to be perfectly made up in order to walk out of their houses to get the paper or they're blasted for it. it's awful. i just wish our collective obsession with celebrity and with thinness would tone the fuck down. >.>;;;
