I am so gleeful about this. There's so much bad fiction, and I'm sure I'm guilty of it from time to time. But this is love. ♥

i think everyone's guilty of at least one thing on that list from time to time, tbh. but with the list in hand (and i'm not kidding, i do plan to print it out >.>) hopefully i'll do that stuff a little less, lol. ♥!

A lot of this is good writing advice in general. If I had a dime for every time I came across someone who thought that "said" just wasn't good enough, well, I wouldn't have to worry about royalty checks.

seriously-- i actually just had that particular conversation with myself the other day, waffling about the possible overuse of "said" and reminding myself that it's better to be simple-- just, sometimes i start to second-guess myself, you know? but it's nice to have things i already know to be true put into words by someone else. :)

The "said" thing has been described by Stephen King as a sign of an insecure author--someone who isn't really confident in their own words yet--and I think there's a lot to that. Which is good, because it means it can be something that you just sort of naturally outgrow as you get out there and flex your muscles. But yeah, it still helps to get reassurance from others that it's really okay.

rofl yes that was exactly the thing i cited to myself as a reminder, lol-- i love the way king talks about writing so very much. 'on writing' is such a great book-- i liked it b/c it never felt like he was trying to teach people how to write like him, more just relating his own work to make his own writing better.

I seriously wanted to marry this person by the time I got to "Don't warn for slash." Seriously, where are these fragile morons who can't just push the back button if slash isn't their thing. WARNING: PEOPLE ARE GAY SOMETIMES.
However, I'm always amused by a warnings list that also works for some as a list of reasons you totally want to read the fic.

lmao i know, right? like it's not the presumption that you need to warn for THE GAY that makes me laugh, it's the idea that you would put a pairing in the header, and then need to say *also* that there was slash. like-- wouldn't the pairing give that away? and if the person reading the fic doesn't know that both those characters are men, why the hell are they reading the fic? lol.

but yes, omg, i run across those sometimes. "warns for slash, violence, some BDSM-- excellent." ;D

Awesome advice, and most totally applicable to all forms of writing, not just fanfiction. She listed so many of my biggest pet peeves (epithets, fancy ways of saying said/says, etc.) and pointed out a couple pitfalls I need to steer clear of myself /o\

Thank you so much for posting! ♥

ikr? the list is awesome, both b/c i was like OMG YES at parts, and "omg i do that" /o\ at parts. XD it's just a good reminder that while you can be a good writer, you're not ever a perfect one. and you're welcome! ♥
