About a week ago, I was at a video shoot. I was taking stills with my digital camera, but had brought along an old Konica film SLR just for fun ( Read more... )

I think there is beauty in some how just knowing what we are supposed to do with our lives. Sometimes it's hard to get there though despite of ourselves.

I was crying on the phone to my ex-girlfriend the other night about how I always planned on my art work supporting our family one day. As I was sobbing she said, "Hon, you are an artist and always will be. You just have to get out of your own way and stop listening to your doubts."

It sounds like Abby was saying much the same thing. We can be the master of our lives and do whatever we see fit. Sometimes we have to just stop standing in the darkness listening to the small voices who are ready to tear us down. You are a beautiful talented soul, Beth. OWN that! And get busy doing whatever YOU want in your life.

But please keep doing photography. You have a real gift and it's so inspiring. <3

It's posts like this that make me miss you, even though I'm more likely to see you now than when I was just a few blocks away. You're awesome, Beth.

I am totally with you about the digital photography diluting the skills. My dad says he never made more beautiful photos than when he was a poor student and had to make every single frame worth the money.

And you have the skills. You should trust them (and you) more: Being too modest (or not acknowledging one's skill) means that more mediocre people go forward when you stay put.

Beth, this photo is so extraordinary I can't even begin to put it into words. I am so honored and grateful to have been able to work with you--when we decided to do this I literally could not stop thinking about it because I have so much respect and love for your immense talent. I've never felt more comfortable around a camera. That's another gift that you have. You know how to make someone feel gorgeous, simply by being gorgeous yourself. :)

And I'm going to be honest with you. The idea of self-critic... I have struggled with that in my work for eternity. It's painful, but at the same time (as someone else said) there is a bizarre comfort in knowing wholeheartedly what your purpose is, what you're supposed to be doing with yourself, even if it might not make you any money. Those are the thoughts and reminders that drag me out of my darkest places. I'm worth it. And so are you! You are so worth every bit of effort you put into making yourself a great artist. And I'm always there to tell you if you ever need a reminder.

I see you as Beth of All Trades, not just because you do so much competently, but because you are so GOOD at so many things--it's who you are. It's not that you are Beth of All Trades, Master of None--you are Beth, Master of All Trades you Work to Accomplish. Some people focus on one thing, you work hard at many things and excel at ALL of them--it's just who you are. Maybe it's the ADD...LOL ( ... )
