that makes no sense at all... i make no sense at all.  i shall start from the top.

This might work.

"Sys>admin>software sources and check box for add CD.Other way is to
type in terminal

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and remove # sign from cd-rom line(it is on top of the file).Save file and close it. Put your Ubuntu disc in drive and go to the synaptic and install build-essential. Yes,you have that package on disc."

From a post that I just found of someone who had the same problem as you. I have to go take a shower because I work at 7 instead of 9 tonight, but I should be out in about 30-45 minutes.

how do you remove # sign from cd-rom line?

Just delete it. But if you do it the synaptic way you don't need to worry about that.
