I am working on essayish things and it occurs to me that Teaboy had a very good idea with this the other day. So... anyone want to play Mornington Crescent? If you're new to the game, I recommend its Wikipedia page and a careful perusing of Teaboy's entry on the subject, which should set you straight. For old hands: of course I wouldn't dream of ( Read more... )

I'm going out shortly, but I might join later! I mean, if you don't mind playing with the International Design rule set so I can plug in non-British equivalents. 1983 version is best - I feel like they went too far with the tweaking in '95, you know? Like, what's wrong with using Congress Street as long as I remember what the bus schedule looks like on alternate federal holidays? FFS.

I don't know, I was quite happy with the 1995 adjustments - it was when they tried to claim that the Stokian Principle was against the spirit of the game that I thought they'd gone too far, although I'm told that most players tend to ignore that little dalliance with the Forth Principle.

The International Design rule is not my preferred style of play, but I really should branch out a little more. It was the 1983 version which expanded the game to Bahrain every other Tuesday but ruled out Taunton as too exotic, wasn't it?

Yeah, and I'm not saying it's without its flaws. It's a little outmoded - I think matching it with the Forty-Second Fry variation would blow the Kensington Corollary ( this is a really great example of that corollary, if you're curious) all to hell - but it's still totally playable. The problem I have with the '95 version is that it's great for bigger cities, but the smaller ones are left in the dust, specially when most of our neighborhood avenues are under two miles but we STILL don't qualify for the suburb clause because of population concentration. It was a nice try and all, and I'd love to see another update, but I think ultimately it was just a case of fixing what wasn't broke.

Okay, I really am going out. And I will be WALKING DOWN CONGRESS STREET, so suck it '95! (Sorry. I'm done now. XD )

Oh yes, I'd read that. A really excellent exploration of some of the game's more convoluted principles, isn't it? I see what you mean about the '95 version, though.

Have a good time! Before you get back I'll have a quick brush-up on the finer details of the '83 version - there are some little variations on the Dirkian Principles that I've never entirely understood.

(I love you <3)

Since the point of the game appears to be to get people to make this face, I think you just won. <3

Awww. But it's fun! Tell you what, we can play the second Tottenham Variation if you want - that's relatively simple. Just don't forget that the Northern Line is wild and - since it's a weekday - Charing Court is blocked until Friday evening.

By all means! It's a holiday week here, which means I'll have to play a bit conservatively at first to avoid triggering the respective protocols, but that shouldn't affect your play at all.

Oh, that's the Milliwaysian Gambit, isn't it? I haven't seen that in ages.

Hmm. I'm tempted to take a risk again, but this time I think I'll play safe. Baker Street.

After that, I wouldn't feel right if I didn't play St John's Wood.

(Plus, I don't want to set myself up to be hit for six later by ignoring something tiresome but obvious like the Wisden Trap.)

Oh, excellent - I was hoping you wouldn't forget that. The Wisden Trap always gets me too, but we could always institute the shunting variation instead, if you'd like? It would make things much simpler.

And if you're going to play St John's Wood, then I think I'd be remiss in not responding with Regent's Park.
