Christine was a nurse, and therefore was interested in the sciences. But since arriving in the city, she'd been learning that there were more forces in the universe than just science, like magic. She'd seen a bit firsthand, and ever studious, she headed for the library to see if she could learn more.

Heading towards the rack of books on magic, she saw a pretty redhead already there. Giving her a slight smile, Christine started to peruse the selection.

Bonnie smiled back, setting down some of her books on the table with a solid thump.

"Druids that were, these things are huge," Bonnie said with a good natured groan. "Looking forward to the day that Bete Noire catalogues all these dusty old things onto some online database."

The blonde had to laugh at the other's reaction to what looked like ancient tomes.

"But I wonder if the spells lose their potency if they're taken off the page and put into a computer."

"Worth the risk," she announced conclusively, wiping off her hands on her skirt. "Lifting these things all day is going to leave me with Popeye arms,I think."

She held out a hand to the blonde. "Bonnie McCullough."

"Popeye?" Christine wasn't familiar with the 20th century cartoon creation, but she took the woman's hand and gave it a firm shake.

"Christine Chapel, nice to meet you."

"Popeye," Bonnie confirmed. "So you're not from 20th century earth, I take it?"

She smiled at the blond. "He's a cartoon sailor who eats a lot of Spinach and has comically oversized arms. But enough about him, he's sort of creepy. Especially the Robin Williams version. Anyway, what books were you looking for?"

Christine merely shook her head no and let Bonnie explain. Once she was done she said, "I'm from the 23rd century actually, so Popeye and his oversized arms didn't stick around."

Looking back to the shelf, she shrugged. "Not sure, really. I'm just interested in the whole concept of magic and wanted to learn more. Maybe I need some kind of general overview type book."

Bonnie was sort of relieved Popeye didn't make it to the 23rd century. That wasn't really how she wanted her time in history to be remembered.

"Are you a mage of any kind?" Bonnie inquired. In the back of her head, she noted that the 23rd century reference hadn't even made her bat a lash. After so much strangeness in this city, it took a lot more than a girl from the future to freak her out.

"Oh no. No magic at all in me. Or, at least, none's shown itself. I'm just curious about it, is all." She touched the spine of a dusty book, purple with gold lettering, and then slid it out.

"I know a wizard here, and he showed me a bit of what he could do. I wanna learn more about it." Christine wondered if Bonnie was a witch, or mage, or whatever, but thought it might be a bit rude to just ask.

Bonnie examined Christina for a moment--and broke into a grin, crinkling up her nose.

"A little light reading?" she teased. "These dusty old things? Let me guess--you're some kind of professor back home? Or a researcher of some kind?"

"Not exactly," she answered, wiping a hand across the book to get off the dust. "I'm a nurse, but I always like learning new things. And I've had to accept that magic is real, and I'm thinking it has to have a place next to science, even if it seems at first that the two wouldn't get along."

"Do you know the Doctor?" she asked. Hopefully the woman wouldn't ask which doctor, because that whole thing still confused Bonnie.

"He's kind of said some similar things."

"Um, sorta. I've seen him around a few times and on the Network." Christine wasn't sure if they were really friends yet, but they were definitely acquaintances.

"About science and magic?"

"Right," she said with a nod. Perched herself on the edge of a table. "He's all science minded and stuff, but when he got that--"

She paused. What was the right word? Wall? Barrier? Well, words were overrated.

"--that thingy down from around the city, he had to use magic and science."

"Yeah," Christine agreed. "That's when I really got interested in learning about magic. There were just some things in this city that science couldn't solve, but magic could. That was kind of hard for me to accept at first, but I've since come around." Hugging the book to her chest, Christine leaned against the shelf.

"What about you? Where does your interest in magic come from?"

"Oh!" Bonnie exclaimed. "Right, sorry, I forgot to mention. I'm a witch."

She taped her finger against one of the books. "Looking for a specific spell right now. Trying to unbadify a bad guy, I think."
