On politics and my disappointment

Nov 05, 2008 20:16

Here's my 2 cents. I'm ashamed to be an American after yesterday's election. And y'know what, I didn't even vote in it. I didn't support either candidate for the position of president, though I'll tell you that the thought of Mrs. Palin having any say in my government scared the shit outta' me. I live in a very democratic state and my vote ( Read more... )

I feel like I'm outside of work smoking a cigarette with you and Jordan, not completely knowing what you all are talking about, but amazingly proud that I have such brilliant friends (believe it or not that does happen often). But now I see you edit those cigarette break conversations. I wish you wouldn't. Your mind is amazing and shouldn't be edited for anyone's benefit. You, of all people, could probably change some people's minds. Rock the fuck on, JC!

The whole amendment thing two thing has been a really big disappointment. What people aren't getting is that it doesn't just affect homosexual couples. They word it in a way that makes you think it will only affect teh gays

damnit... time to move to CT or MA

Prop 8 in California had tons of money put behind it by a lot of Christian churches. The Mormon church threw tons of money into it. The only reason it got on the ballot is that some out of state church hired a bunch of people to go around collecting signatures. They stood outside grocery stores and said things like protect kids from pedophiles...and people signed. Every other commercial on tv was of people saying gay marriage would be taught in school and second graders would be brought on field trips to watch gay weddings. The amount of money and misinformation coming out of that campaign was absolutely ridiculous. There were huge protests in Hollywood tonight protesting prop 8. Thousands of people marched for miles down Hollywood blvd to Hollywood and Hyland (tourist area.) They staged a sit in in the streets and there was video of the demonstrators pounding on the doors of the CNN building (I'm not sure I follow the thinking on that one.) I think the protest was impromptu, just a few people, then grew as people saw it and joined ( ... )

Actually, NJ had two props on the ballot, one to force the state gov to ask before borrowing money, and one to let judges be appointed much much easier. And if you don't like either candidate, you can vote against the one you dislike. One fella I talked to said that after Nader pulled so many votes the democrats incorperated enough of his concepts to pull his base towards them, you could have voted for Barr, the libeterian fiscally conservitave condidate in an effort to make the republicans do the same thing.

That's why I said major propositions. Neither was a big enough issue to make me really care all that much. Changes in how business is done, not really what business is done.
What you said about voting for the guy I dislike less is kinda the point of what I said about the system being flawed. This is a heavily democratic state and the way the electorate works it pretty well excludes the possibility of an independant gaining the executive office. I'll vote for someone I believe will do a good job, not a lesser of 2 evils. I didn't like either option and wouldn't support either.

it breaks my heart to know that hate still runs rampant.

but you know what? an LJ friend said that the fact that it's even being VOTED on shows that progress is being made.

i'm taking the opportunity to seek out LGBT activist groups to try and file an appeal with the supreme court, as is being done in CA.

but it really is heartbreaking knowing i have to pay the same taxes as heteros but i'm denied my basic civil rights.
