EDIT: I think I have it figured out thanks to you guys! I use Yahoo for my webhosting and it turns out Yahoo offers Wordpress and Moveable type to build my blog right on my domain for free! I'll start working on it! Thanks again!

Hey guys,

Does anyone on my list know anything about the internets? Specifically, building a blog? I'm thinking of ( Read more... )

Wordpress is free and you can install it anywhere you want. It's what I use for my blog. :)

OK, wait. So Wordpress is something I can download? It's not like, web-based?

Well - both, sort of. You download the script itself and install it on your web server. The actual admin area is web-based.

You don't have to start a new blog simply to take advantage of using your domain. With a free service like ZoneEdit, you can set it up so that anybody entering your domain gets your LJ or whatever (WebForward™).

Additional, you can use a feature called 'cloaking':
-----------------------
Cloaking is a special kind of WebForward™. Just like a WebForward™, cloaking creates a hidden "A" record pointing to our web server. However, when our web server gets a request for your site from a visitor, not only does our web server forward the visitor to the URL of your choosing, but an invisible frame is used to hide the destination URL. Your domain name stays in the location bar of your visitor's browser, thus "cloaking" the destination URL.
-----------------------

Is this too complicated?

No, I know exactly what you are talking about. It actually does that now. I have that domain set up to automatically forward to my LJ. Really, I am just wanting to move away from LJ. I plan to keep my journal so I can read my friend's pages and communities, but I want to set up a blog that is more customizable than LJ is. I know there is a lot I can do with LJ, but it requires some advanced knowledge of stuff that I don't feel like dealing with...

But if I can't find a good way to do what I want, setting up that cloaking thing and redirecting to blogger or something might work out! Thanks!

I should also mention that we are using WordPress, which is very easy to use. I use webspace from a local guy in Halifax and it's only $5 per month CDN.

As a friend of Tamara's, I'd be happy to help you in any way I can.

i have my website redirecting to my typepad journal right now & i can choose whether or not i want it to show coffee-drinker.typepad.com or stay coffee-drinker.com. i really like how clean & simple i can make my typepad journal (my server is small so i needed the hosting) but sixapart also has moveable type where you host it yourself. i first saw journals set with moveable type & when i looked into doing that i found out about typepad.

and sixapart, although huge now, is an indie company started by a couple out of their apt & i like that.

I did know about Moveable Type, but it seems way more advanced than I want to get into...I'll definitely look into the TypePad being able to show my domain...I do like Six-apart, I just want something more customizable than LiveJournal right now. Thanks for the advice!

it's more professional than lj, too (although i love the comments & community of it) i find typepad to be really easy to figure out, they have a great database where i almost always find the info in need & when i needed to ask them something they got back to me fairly quickly. so i'd guess that MT would be similar.

support, that's the word, they have great support!

I use the blogger format on my server and it has worked fine for me. It's very easy to set up on your server and updating/customizing is web-based and very easy to use as well.

I use Blogger to publish to my domain, too, and have had zero problems in the three years I've been using it. I tried doing Moveable Type (or is it the other one? Whichever one you put on servers instead of paying for space) but I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

Unfortunatley I have just learned that blogger had discontinued that service...if you already HAD the service, they will continue to support you, but they aren't allowing new people to sign up for publishing at domains.

Yeah, I have been fooling with moveable type today and it's way complicated. I'm dinking around with WordPress now and I'm liking it so far, so I'll probably end up with that...
