Jane had not been far. She had been in her room with Lydia, lying upon the bed and playing with her baby in a quiet game in which she tapped Lydia's nose and delighted in the sounds she made. It was a pleasant day and she was happy to spend at least half of it indoors if this were the result.

Elizabeth watched them for a moment, a smile upon her face as she contemplated them. She almost did not want to disturb them, for it seemed a sweet moment between mother and daughter that should not be interrupted; yet her news threateed to burst out at any moment and she was not sure how much longer she could contain it. She rapped gently upon the doorframe. "Jane?" she enquired. "May I come in?"

Jane lifted her gaze to the door as she collected Lydia in her arms, letting her daughter play with her unbound hair. "Please do," Jane invited, smiling warmly. "Lizzy, you look ever so well!"

"Thank you," said Elizabeth, beaming with happiness. She sat down beside her sister, touching Lydia's soft cheek with her fingertips. And then before she could contain herself any longer, or make inquiries to Jane about her day as she normally would, she burst out, "Oh, Jane, I have the most wonderful news!"
