You know, I never thought much about Emmett Kelly until I read this quote by him, about his primary "clown" character:
“'Weary Willie' is very real to me. He is a man who has given up. The boat has gone and left him. The cards are stacked against him. He's content to make out with what he's got. He knows he'll go no further.”
Can a man go no further when he believes he can't? Does his attitude make it a fact, instead of a possibility? Or can circumstances be so insurmountable hope holds no meaning? Can there be a time when no dream is worth pursuing?
If you ever find yourself in Sarasota, Florida, I highly recommend a visit to the Ringling Museum of Art. Although I'm an artist (or at least my college degree proclaims that I am), I would skip the actual art museum part, and go straight to the less-visited Circus Museum, home of Emmett Kelly's original costume. That place is AWESOME!
