I debated for a long time, and I think that, rather than Japanese, I'll learn Mandarin.
In a perfect world I'd learn Cantonese, but it's supposed to be one of the hardest languages in the world to learn.

Besides, more people speak Mandarin than any other language.

I'll prolly start a night class in the fall.

Any advice from anybody?

No language is harder than any other; they all take a baby 3-5 years to learn.

Languages are simply easier or harder for English-speakers to learn.

Certain languages DO become harder to learn both the older you get AND what language you originally speak.

Are you sure? Japanese is really easy. It's the most logical language I've ever encountered. There are almost no exceptions and no verb conjugating and all sentences have their parts of speech arranged in exactly the same way.

I'm threatening Dan that I'm going to learn Mandarin so I don't need subtitles for dinner conversation with his family.

The boy forgets to translate for the less cultured gf sometimes.

His mom tried teaching me a couple words but I had elevation sickness at the time. blah.

well i love japanese but chinese (mandarin) is pretty too. i say go for it! and it might prove worthy in the future, since china is getting up there economically and stuff.

hey that would be cool if you learnt tamil! and well, since there are tamil sudras, i think it should be okay for you to learn tamil too.

i hope people don't think i'm as awful as the above comment makes me sound.
