I debated for a long time, and I think that, rather than Japanese, I'll learn Mandarin.
In a perfect world I'd learn Cantonese, but it's supposed to be one of the hardest languages in the world to learn.

Besides, more people speak Mandarin than any other language.

I'll prolly start a night class in the fall.

Any advice from anybody?

You could suppliment your class with language software. Like Rosetta or something close to that.

I'm sure I will, and I'll probably try to get a few things vaguely conceptualized before starting the class.

I love talking to people who are going to be learning other languages because I'm a language nerd. ^_^ I'm studying to become an interpreter right now ( ... )

I live in a university town with a large Chinese population (both Mandarin and Cantonese speaking), but there's not a way to learn Cantonese.

And I've even had people from Hong Kong tell me how confusing Cantonese is, i.e. seven to nine tones, as oppose to the four in Mandarin.

I'll enjoy ANY of them, though. :)

Awesome. :) Make friends with someone who speaks Mandarin if you can, if that's what you end up doing. That'd be a big help.

Do a sit-up for every word you learn.
