BALLS! BALLS, BALLS, BALLS!

Polish writer Stanislaw Lem dead at 84.

SOLARIS remains one of my favorite books ever. Trust me, both of the movies that have been made of it have fuckall to do with the book.

Read it. It's short and magnificent.

Oh, and while you're at the bookstore, grab One Human Minute and The Futurological Congress, one of the ( Read more... )

I've only read one of his books, a mystery novel. The main character had his corpus callosum severed, so the two halves of his brain operated independently. His left brain was the narrator and detective, and his right brain the only witness. It kicked copious quantities of ass.

I'd be very sorry he was dead, but (*is embarrassed*)... I kind of thought he already was. So now I'm glad he's alive.

Except that he's dead.

Great, now I'm embarrassed AND confused.

I only own SIX books of his, but he's one of my all time favorites.

I was first introduced to him my freshman year of college by Professor Tempest, in a class called "Russian and Eastern European Science Fiction." That year there were five students, one of whom dropped the class.

Last time he taught it, there were fifty. :D

I am stealing the name "Professor Tempest."

Isn't it the bestest name ever?
His first name is Richard, making him...*giggle*..."Dick Tempest!"

Between him and Buzz Spector, the University of Illinois has some cool-named Profs.

Tempest also has an incredible accent. Born in England, partly raised in the USSR, back to England, then to the US.

Madness.
