One time, I was in New Mexico, and we were driving through the most amazing landscape with red soil and scrubby pinyon trees and a thunderstorm on the way--mind-blowlingly lovely--and my friends in the car refused to look out the window because they were too busy speculating about whether our poetry teacher had ever had affairs with some of the other poetry teachers.
Doesn't talking about other people and their drama seem a lot like the reasons we often drink socially? It's a real easy way out in social situations when we feel too lazy to come up with something else. And it can also get so distracting that you miss what's going on around you.
