The more people talk to me about marriage and try to argue for it the more I am convinced it is a terrible idea! It is like their arguments are just re-enforcing my own beliefs, and it is not that I feel I am being closed off to their arguments because I have never been 100% against marriage and would definitely still consider it (so don't worry ( Read more... )

I got married because I really liked the idea of having Greatrick for a last name.... Oh and for the sparkley diamond.

I'm rocking it.

after throughly discussing this subject with Phil I was just wondering why it is you are so opposed to Marriage. Not because I want to argue with you and try and change your mind but because I'm curious.

Might be a better conversation for the telephone or in person. :) It has a lot to do with my beliefs about how relationships should work in general and a little bit to do with anti-religious reasons.

Marriage is a tax break for straight people. I'm with you; not something I'm interested in.

There's really not a point to it...

The only reason I would do it is for the romantic aspect, I guess. I have no idea.

Most people probably just do it 'cause it's what you do. If it wasn't what you do then that would... be cool.

I'm doin' it:

1) So my family and Zack's family and our family of friends can meet and have an awesome time.

2) To celebrate the commitment Zack and I have had for the last few years and intend to keep having.

3) Tax breaks and insurance.

I was going to say I don't really understand wanting to be married just to be married, but... before I started planning this whole wedding shindig I didn't, but now I really like the idea of having a visible symbol of being in a committed relationship (the ring) and getting all the social/cultural benefits that go with it. So I can see the appeal, but I think if I didn't want to have a wedding I wouldn't want to get married. Zack and I know we love each other. That's what really matters.

Hee, I just realized that my attitude towards marriage is pretty much the same as my attitude towards college. It's great for some people and so-so for some others, you should get some real life experience before you decide on it, and it's only one of many ways to have a successful adult life.

Aside from tax breaks and insurance why can't you do all of that without marriage?

I mostly could, but people are less likely to travel for a party than a wedding. And honestly, why -not- get married? That's mostly where I'm at right now. It has some slight benefits and I don't have any reason not to.
