I'm very sorry about Mercury and I'm sorry that the attempts at a calm solution went awry. I like to think spirits can glean intention from others, and that Mercury would know your intention toward them was kindness.

I love your descriptions of time spent with friends. It all seems so... gentle and loving.

I like Topaz' idea of opening presents one at a time. We do that here. We kind of settled naturally into a round robin years ago and always stuck to it, giving each person their time to be in the middle and the sidelines, appreciating and observing the appreciation.

And fractals ABSOLUTELY count as presents! I'm glad everyone else thought so too :)

Over the last few years with "traditional Christmas", I was a bit put off by the ritual of "everyone stop what they're doing and look at Andrea open her present... now everyone watch Binit open his present... now everyone see Cherise open her present..." but when I think about it, a mad frenzy wouldn't really work either. Will need to think about what it means and re-engineer it to what we want before small potatoes are afoot.
