Nino paced the livingroom. Pearl watched him from the couch, her head swivveling slowly back and forth. Nino ignored her. So long as she didn't try to get in the way of his pacing, she didn't matter. His hands were clenched behind his back. They clenched tighter.
Ohno was coming. Apparently. He'd said noon, but he wasn't at the door. Nino wasn't sure he wanted Ohno at the door anyway.
Nino snarled.
Stupid merman. Ohno had left. Ohno had packed, sent everything on, left him, not said a damn thing about it. Just left. And now he wanted back? Now he wanted to talk? Ohno was the one who was supposedly leaving the next day. Or whatever. Because he'd spent this week learning how to live without Nino.
Nino faltered, nearly tripping over his own feet. What if he had learned to live without Nino? Had he bonded his soul to someone who didn't need him in the same way? Had Ohno realized that? Was that was this was for?
The pacing redoubled in effort and speed. He'd kill him. No! He'd just hit him. Yell. Not kill. Not strangle. Not wrap his hands around Ohno's pale, pale throat and squeeze and squeeze until it became red and his face turned blue.
Nino stopped in his tracks. He shoved his hands into his hair and pulled.
Somewhere far away, Tír na nÓg stirred.
What was he doing?
