Maki muffled a giggle at Meisa's returned look, and picked delicately at her mushroom tart with a fork while she let the conversations roll over her. Yes. This was a birthday gathering worth having, and her first in longer than she liked to think of.
She was lucky. She would have to do something good for Meisa, as well, for suggesting this at all.
Her eyes widened at Ohno and Nino across the table as they seemed to indicate there was something she had missed about their gift.
"What is inside," she questioned warily, eying them both suspiciously as she set down her fork, in order to reach under the table to get the box at her feet. She made room for it on the table before bringing it up to open the top, settling it in her lap in order to pull out the bag and pry open the clasp. She was worried it would be delicate but it felt solid under her fingertips

Maki hadn't planned to have any macaroni, but as Ohno decided, and Nino stole a bite...it just looked really good. With a shifty look sideways, waiting to see when Meisa wasn't looking, Maki spooned a couple of bites onto her plate. She was aware she had been completely obvious, but it only amused her more than anything else.
She did listen in slight fascination as Nino elaborated, and was more than a little impressed that Meisa had picked the language out. "Health, is a good thing to have." She made a quiet, happy noise around a bite of macaroni, and found...it actually did go alright with the last few sips of her punch.
Even if her cheeks were already flushing from the alcohol.
As Meisa took a forkful of Ohno's dish, she saw Maki going for the macaroni out of the corner of her eye. She grinned and whined playfully, "Makiiii, take a bit more! I can't finish this by myself!"
Okay, maybe Meisa was starting to feel the effects of the alcohol a tiny bit. She took a bite of the macaroni (she made a note to herself to try Bluebell's the next time she went there for lunch to compare) and smiled at Nino's explanation. Meisa was glad she wasn't too far off the mark.
She giggled at the sound Maki made at her bite of macaroni. "I told you so! Please take more!"
Now that he had food in his stomach, Ohno downed a good half of his punch in one fell swoop. It's not as if it would hit him hard or anything.
His food was absolutely delicious - he didn't think he'd ever had anything quite like it before. He piled all of the ingredients on a fork and offered it to Nino. "Here, try!"
Nino helped himself to another bite of Meisa's macaroni while Meisa plied it on Maki. He smiled, glad Maki had found a friend in the doctor.
Ohno pushed a fork into his face and Nino opened his mouth, automatically and obediently taking the bite. He chewed. It was very good. Good enough to warrant a sip of the new punch. Nino took the sip and smiled. "It's good."
"But I-" Maki's laughed excuse died on her lips, because a little more would not kill her, and the dish was pretty special, even if it wasn't quite as good as the macaroni at Bluebell. It was definitely different.
So she got herself another few bites, still laughing softly. "Thanks, Meisa. It is delicious."
She didn't miss the exchange between Ohno and Nino, and it was incredibly adorable and Maki ducked her head over her plate to hide a little blush. Maybe...more punch, would help. She refilled her glass with the newer punch, and the stronger liquor it contained burned a little on the way down, but it was tasty.
The exchange between Ohno and Nino had Meisa trying to catch Maki's eyes, but with the other ducking her head, Meisa tried to discreetly elbow Maki instead. It was fun to have someone to squee (discreetly!) with about these sorts of things.
When it looked like Maki and Nino wouldn't take anymore of the macaroni and Meisa was full, she offered the rest to Ohno. "If you're still a bit hungry, do you want to finish the rest?" Meisa looked around the table. "I hope everyone still has room for desert!"
Ohno looked up when Meisa offered him the rest of her macaroni and cheese, his eyes lighting up. He nodded and took the plate, nudging his own toward Nino a bit.
"Have more of that, if you want," he said with a soft smile. Anytime he could get Nino to eat something, he was happy.
"Oh don't worry, I will!" he chimed in, already scarfing down the macaroni and cheese that had been presented to him.
Smiling a little at Ohno, Nino took another bite of the pork belly. He took his time chewing and swallowing - it was rich and he wanted to savor it. Maybe after a few bites he'd have some more macaroni.
"So, you two," he said, lifting his glass at Meisa and Maki, "fill me in on your weeks. I feel like I haven't seen you in ages, Maki-chan."
"Not like I can miss my birthday cake," Maki agreed, laughing a bit at Ohno's assurances.
She worked slowly on her macaroni, and maybe it was how tasty the punch was, or maybe it was just that she'd had enough now that she didn't notice the alcoholic burn anymore, but this glass was going just a little faster.
Maki blushed faintly, because she recalled the last time she had seen Nino and Ohno and it had involved waking up in their bed. "It has been awhile. I haven't been doing much. Work, and class. I've had one patron in particular with quite a bit of research for me, so I've been busy."
Meisa was trying to drink her second glass a little slower than the first, but before she knew it, it was gone as well. She pursed her lips, not wanting to suggest another round in case no one wanted more to drink. Taking a sip of her water instead, Meisa thought of her last couple weeks.
"Work and more work. Last week I had a particularly shitty day, but a patient with a broken arm made it better. This week the whole ER staff found out that one of the attendings was getting married to a nurse up in surgery." Meisa smiled. "I was tasked with getting the party favors for a impromptu bachelorette party and ran into an old friend."
Ohno smiled softly at the memory of Maki sharing their bed. Perhaps tonight would be a repeat? He hoped so, if Meisa was open to it. He wanted to cuddle with his favorite girl on her birthday. (And perhaps add a girl to that list of favorites).
"Broken arm huh? No crazy car accidents or people cutting off limbs?" He was merely joking, and he took a long gulp of his drink. There was a bit of the macaroni left and he passed it to Nino, sneaking another bite of the pork belly.
"I've been busy with the show, but that's pretty much it."
Nino smiled at Maki's blush. If he and Ohno were going to be following Meisa and Maki back to Meisa's apartment for cake and darkened lighting, Nino really, really hoped it would allow him room to cuddle. Waking up with Maki between himself and Ohno was something that Nino definitely wanted to repeat. He didn't want to make Meisa feel put out, however. They'd have to tread that line carefully.
"Just the usual work for me," he said, looking at Meisa. "I have fewer hours now. Nothing so exciting as broken arms."
Maki's nose wrinkled a bit at Ohno's questions, mostly because she couldn't imagine working in a job in which such things might come up. Granted as a librarian she was exposed to shocking information every day, but there was the difference between books and reality, even in nonfiction.
She was looking forward to kicking back with everyone, nibbling cake and watching movies. Though whether she could concentrate with the amount of alcohol in her system she wasn't used to was another question entirely.
"I've never been to a bachelorette party," she mused leisurely. "They always sounded like fun. What kind of favors do they have for something like that?"
Meisa was a bit bemused at the smiles Ohno and Nino were wearing when they spotted Maki blushing. Had she missed something? It had been a while since Meisa had had this much alcohol in her system, so it was entirely possible that she had spaced out for a bit
( ... )
Ohno laughed at the descriptions of the party favors, shaking his head. He hadn't been to a bachelor or a bachelorette party and he doubted he ever would. Not too many of his friends were really marrying-types.
"Sounds like fun, really," Ohno said, finishing off the last little bits of his food and leaning back against Nino. His arm wound around the fay's waist and kept him close.
"I could go for the champagne. At least it will guarantee if one of us passes out we're in a safe place when we do." He doubted he'd be passing out any time soon from alcohol. Maki on the other hand was quite pink-cheeked and while he'd be perfectly fine carrying her - she deserved to have her cake and eat it too.
