I think with this season they've tried to put Henry in a better context where he's not this horrible guy, he was just doing what he could with what he had. And I think this flashback was definitely good to show he tried to be a good dad.
I think the presence of the good chemistry is what left me wanting to know more about Shawn/Joy. But I think you're right that it was meant to feel a bit underdeveloped because they did only hook up once. Still...I think it would've been interesting to see a flashback of it or something. :)
The Shawn/Gus stuff seemed a little off track to me, as well. Don't know what's up with that.
The Shules moment didn't really have a place in the episode. It came out of nowhere. Weird.
I also agree that Shawn/Joy was a bit undone, but seeing as how I LOVED how the actress played her attraction to Shawn, I'm hoping there is some big crazy story as to how they hooked up that they will go back to eventually. Actress was a little stiff, but the character itself was great.
The flashback was probably the best they've done though. It was adorable!
I know they were probably trying to show that Shawn was uncomfortable being around Gus because he had this big secret...but it still felt weird.
The Shawn/Juliet interaction in the earlier parts of the episode were fine and then they just threw the other scene in there. Not as bad as some of the other times they've thrown Shules into an episode, but still out of place and slightly annoying.
I really hope they bring Joy back. And I really want a flashback on what the heck happened to hook them up in the first place.
Personally, I'm all for Shules (so a bit biased :-D but I think it did make sense where it was placed. If the writers are taking the Shawn/Juliet angle (as they seem to be doing) it would've been weird to have Shawn suddenly hooking up with another girl without any thought to Juliet. I mean, it's Shawn, so there will be other girls, but I do think Juliet is on his mind at the moment.
It felt so, so weird for me that the actor who played Carl was the guy in "It's the Great Pumpkin". It's not like I haven't seen SPN actors in other shows before, but I couldn't get Samhain out of my head, when this guy was actually kind of wimpy.
I didn't notice the 'friend' thing! Hee!
The Snoopy Dance made my week, I swear.
I think that they tried to shove too much into this episode, that's why it was so disjointed. They focused a lot on Gus' family because they were guest stars, and you're right, Shawn's relationship with Joy was lacking background info. (Shawn checking her out was pretty hilarious, though - or rather, Gus' reaction XD)
When Carl's daughter was yelling at him outside the police station in my head I was thinking "wow...is this guy always controlled by psychotic female family members?" :D
I cracked up when Shawn was checking Joy out and Gus asked him what he was looking out and Shawn would just distract him. And Gus was oblivious. Oh boys. (Can you tell I haven't slept in a while?)
When I first saw Carl I yelled out Samhain. LOL. I didn't notice if the set was the same. Should've paid more attention. My favorite part was the Snoopy dance. Hehe.
I'm fairly certain it was the same location. I went back and tried to watch clips from "Monster Movie" to see, but since it's in B/W, I still couldn't tell. :( Oh well.

I just wondered why they replaced Ernie Hudson as Gus' Dad.
I also loved the Snoopy Dance. :)
