Ozai and Mai. Not romantically, but I loved how you wrote them at odds in 'What Becomes of a Broken Heart'. I wouldn't mind seeing more.

Not the original requestor, but d'awwww. People trying to kill each other should not be that oddly sweet. Also, the line "His expression told her exactly where Zuko got the near-total inability to notice flirting or sexually-chancy situations from" made me snigger like an idiot.

Mai trying to protect her son is amazing. Ozai is also pleased she reacts violently to threats to his grandson. He just disapproves of her perceiving him as a threat.

Ozai needed that arranged marriage, let me tell you.

Oh, wonderful! I really didn't expect this at all, but it was fantastic and has all the elements of other stories I love. (Notably Ozai actually being a skilled fighter, though it's blindly apparent the man knows SOMETHING about martial arts in the finale.)

And it's really nice to see that Mai has the same elements of being an affectionate and protective mother. She nearly puts Ursa's mama bearing to shame.

And as the other poster mentions, I laugh at the lack of social graces as genetic. It seems to me that Azula's lack of knowing how to flirt as situational. She's aware of her failure at it. Zuko? ... he's very lucky he has Mai.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Ozai is always so much fun to write. (He totally knows martial arts, and I am always a little weirded out by people making him helpless/ineffective after Aang removed his firebending. Am I the only one who has noticed that a lot of the really damaging stuff he's done were done by him talking to people? [Okay, there is the Zuko-scar, but he took his throne through talking to people and Ursa's love, and he took Ba Sing Se through talking to people and Azula's love, and he has some scary charisma.]

Also, I just like Ozai beating the crap out of people.)

Mai defied Azula for her husband. She would totally kill for her children. ^__^

I'm not sure if genetic is the word I'd use, but yeah, definitely a family problem. *snickers* I think Ozai, at least, has enough experience these days that if he'd been in Zuko's position during "Cave of Two Lovers", he would have snogged Song.

I'd see him being utterly, soul crushingly, DEPRESSED but that's not helpless. So it's nice to see someone who writes Ozai after the depression as a force to be reckoned with and acknowledges his charisma. I seriously believe that Ozai had the court and officials and Fire Sages wrapped around his fingers. If the Fire Sages had really wanted Iroh, Iroh would have been Firelord, no matter what Ursa did.

Well, I rank Ursa as a higher Mama Bear because she faced a Firelord who's powers were still working. Not that I'd ever touch Mai's kids. Not at all.

Aww, Song! The fandom doesn't love her enough. She's the superior 'other woman' of Zuko's life. ^_^

Eeee, someone else who sees it! Yeah, depression is how I read Ozai being immediately after Sozin's Comet. I just figure he comes out of it sooner or later. (Of course, in my headspace, he's entirely "meh" about this getting the Firelordship back, but I think he knows that the Avatar will never let him do that. Also, he's the Phoenix King, bitches.)

That's an interesting idea about the Fire Sage and Iroh. I've always had the notion that it was Iroh's choice not to challenge Ozai that kept the Fire Nation from a civil war. But you're right, Ozai would have needed the support of the Fire Sages to even get as far as he did with being crowned.

Ursa is a higher Mama Bear, but Mai's still young. She'll grow into it.

Song is. She's the only other woman I habitually pair with Zuko. (I like Zuko/Toph, for some reason, but usually don't go for it instinctively. And Zuko/Katara pisses me off because a lot of the big Zuko/Katara fans are horrible towards Mai, and that is NOT ON.)

Y'know, that totally reminds me of an evil Emperor Norton. Though, Ozai's eccentric is almost justified. Almost. He was actually royality and not slightly insane.

I do find that intresting, but he was very keen on how history would look upon him. It's just he readily says Azula is crazy and needs to be taken out when her father is obviously worse. Oh well, I give Iroh a pass because of Lu Ten's death.

Ursa can give Mai tips on how to deal with cranky firebenders threatening children. She suggests pillows because it's harder for people to figure out suffocation.

Thank you! I was DELIGHTED at all the Song love, though a Song sprong in my head is going, "WHAT IS MY MOTHER DOING!? D:" I notably loved the Song/Mai/Zuko drabble.

Iroh may give Ozai a lot more leniency than he does Azula. Azula is his niece, yes, but Ozai is his brother. He probably has a lot more fond memories of Ozai than he does of Azula, so it's harder for him to voice the "he's a psycho, he needs to go" issues.

Ozai would look very wounded about the 'threatening children' thing because he was so not threatening Hitoshi. Then Ursa would have to give him a beat-down for what he did to Zuko and he'd like it.

I need to write some young Ozai/Ursa where they are shagging in the middle of a bunch of people they just killed.

Song-love is awesome! Who is the daddy of your Song-sprog? (The daddy of mine just goes to prove that I really like strange and unusual pairings.)

Alas, my ability to show sarcasm failed. :( Of course Ozai's insane, that's part of his charm.

Ozai likes babies until they get old enough to mouth off at ill opportune times?

(Forgive me, I am suddenly envisioning post-series Ursa and Ozai as some demented Rumiko Takahashi couple gone utterly wrong. But yes, more consensual Ozai and Ursa smut is needed in this world.)

As much as I love Song crack pairings and would much love for a Song/Jet spawn, the Daddy is currently an OC though Tian takes after his mother in demeanor. (At the least until I get creative on the HOW or/and I convince my partner in fandom crime that Songspawn genetics can be nearly ANYONE of Earth Kingdom persuasion who is alive and canon isn't THAT awesome for cracklove.)

Ozai likes children when he doesn't have to keep them. Grandchildren are ideal. He can have fun with them, then give them back to their parents.

(I don't understand why people would even write them non-consensual. They had two kids together. One more than necessary for a man who wasn't even likely to take the throne for years and years, if ever.)

Mmm, Song/Jet spawn. I should get one of those too. My Song-sprog is with the guy in this story. (I would also approve of Song/Haru spawn.)

... I think that's a common joy among all grandparents. Now I'm having trouble deciding if he'd be the best grandfather ever or the worse. (I have a feeling it depends on the day and sometimes the hour).

Because apparently, Ursa's a saint and Ozai's an evil rampaging monster. I actually hate that take on the early marriage and apparently so do the creators whom had to stress that both parties found it agreeable. People were leaning too much on Zuko's POV and ignoring the foreshadowing (Turtleducks biting) and the fact she was a little too quick to jump to the idea of killing Azulon to be angelic woman that fandom wants to believe.

Dang it, now I have to write an Ursa/Ozai smut fic and post it somewhere.

… I really like the idea of Song/Long spawn, now. Those babies would be amazing. (Is there a spawn father that is not approved?)

Yeah, it definitely depends on the day and the hour. On the plus side, anyone who tries to hurt/kidnap/kill the grandchildren has basically picked up a big "please kill me, Phoenix King Ozai" sign.

Bah! Ursa is so very far from sainthood. I dislike the whole Saint Ursa idea, because, come on, we only see her from Zuko's point-of-view. Zuko wuvs his mommy. Zuko also wuvs his daddy, despite his daddy doing horrible things to him. Zuko is not a reliable narrator about how decent his family is.

Doooooo iiiiiiiit! Alternatively, check out the Porn Battle. I know I posted some Ozai/Ursa prompts. Among many other things.

Xuyi is kind of amazing. She's got the worst/best traits of both her parents, and she will be a scary, scary Commander of the Dai Li when she grows up. (Ozai is only approved for sexing.)

It’d be a neat way to commit suicide but I’d rather go via petting his hair.

I’d like to think Ursa’s a generally good person, and just more cunning and catty than usually portrayed. She’s got to be a clever woman to capture Ozai’s attention, I would think. A very vicious about protecting herself and family, though family will always come first. I’d like to think she’s got a little black book somewhere of ‘ways to dispose of people who look at my kids cross eyed’. In my head space, this is mostly due to the fact Ursa was raised by her mother and Roku’s family was pretty much disliked where she was raised. She knew enough self defense in case if people got antsy.

I am considering it! Throne sex comes to mind.

Tian ended up being a doctor like Mama. *Pets him.* Brilliant, good hearted, but a bit of a snot. He’s a bender, but he’s pretty sad at it, but that’s okay, he know 20 herbs that bring a slow painful death with just drop.
