Heart Rate Monitor

I am in the market for a heart-rate monitor, and am at a loss for which one to get.  There are all sorts of them, ranging in price from $20-$1300 (who on EARTH would pay $1300 for a stupid little heart-rate monitor?  Is it made of gold?).  Basically, I want one that is fairly accurate, and if it has extra things like a pedometer, stopwatch, etc., ( Read more... )

knowing your heart rate is overrated. :)

I'd recommend searching amazon and looking at the ratings there. There also may be a Consumer Reports article about this hiding at your local library. Your librarian may be able to help you find it.

I did try to find a consumer reports article online, but needed a subscription to see it. I didn't think of the library, though--thanks, I'll try that.

Yeah, my uncle has a subscription and I keep meaning to ask him if he'll share his online login info with me, but I don't talk to him much and haven't remembered to bring it up. Maybe this is a good reason to call him.

Also, this question was recently posed to the local bike club yahoogroup and I don't think any good recommendations were made. The few people that responded that had them said they paid under $100-200 for theirs, but they weren't really happy with them because they didn't always work properly.

If you want a good heart rate monitor, you're going to have to pay a little extra for it than you may have intended. This is why I don't own one. A good one retails for a little more than $100 it seems.

REI.com or Sierra Trading Post might have more information.

I'm expecting to pay a little more for a good one, I just have no idea what a good one is since they are all different and have vastly different prices and features.

I will check out those sites--thanks!
