Pride Goeth Before a *WHAM*

So, I just got my car safety-inspected on Tuesday the 2nd after work. The VA quality control guy was an older man who wouldn't take no for an answer about giving me his seat while the actual inspection team worked, and he chatted me up about the car. I was in a pleasant mood, so I probably had my open, harmless Mom face on. The world was ( Read more... )

Back strain, but the seatbelt and Charles took most of the blow. Thank you Lord for seatbelts. :)

Yeah, I feel lucky! A three car crash, one gets totalled, and it isn't mine? YES. Also, everyone was belted in, and while shaken up, there was no spurting blood or anything awful like that. Although the teen leapt from the car and screamed, "OMG I'M SO SORRY!! I'M SO SORRY!I'M SO SORRY!!!" Then she broke out weeping. Apparently, she was really sorry. :) Poor thing.

I remember thinking, Don't apologize to us honey-child, save that for your father, because you just ruined a shiny Volvo, and his insurance rates just doubled. New drivers have to crash at least one car, so I have no idea why parents would let them have a nice auto, knowing it hasn't long to live even if the young person is careful. My first car was a $50 junker, and I smashity-smash-smashed it but good.

Does that mean your 15 year-old vehicle is worth less?

How did you know? bec_87rb October 9 2007, 14:54:53 UTC
In fact, my Toyota bumper does have the imprint of a Toyota grill on it. Since 'Yotas never die, this area has a certain number of them, faded, unassuming, flying under police radar in the slow lane. Until they run out of luck. :)

Yipes! I'm glad you're okay!

And the car, too, which has just totally vindicated QQguy's and your high opinion of it. :)

Will you think about selling it and getting something new(-er)? Or do you feel a loyalty to it that would make you feel guilty and lie awake nights thinking of the betrayed look on its bumper when you let someone else drive it away?

I think it comforts me to sit in it. It's familiar, dark friendly blue, not fast, not showy, just a little thing that I can tootle around town in. Since it has no power, I am not as tempted to drive aggressively. It has continuity with the past - a high school friend has been its mechanic for years, so I have an excuse to go see him. Also, I like the shape. I think recent cars are badly shaped, for the most part, not pleasing to the eye or soul.

So I don't know if its loyalty so much as comfort with it, and a Pennsylvania Dutch thought, "hey, still works, why throw it out?"
