Mermaid Parade 2009

At Coney Island each year in June, there's a Mermaid Parade. This June was no exception. I took the photos at the link, today. Rather than put 48 photos under a cut, I figure it's easier to link to the Flickr album.

What creative costumes! I think my favorite is the girl in all yellow (she's in one of the last pictures, off to the right). Some of those people, however, should not be wearing...such revealing clothing. Eek!

It sounds like a lot of fun.

I agree with having a digital camera. I think it's much more convenient and you can get better pictures.

is there a reason for the mermaid parade?

that girl in yellow also popped out for me, but also quite a few other costumes were really neat.

Painting yourself yellow tends to be memorable. Besides being atypical, yellow is the color of memory. It's no mistake that most highlighters & legal pads are yellow.

Do parades have reasons?

"The Mermaid Parade is held in celebration of the beginning of the summer season, and so it traditionally takes place on the Saturday closest to the calendar start of summer, regardless of the weather."

"The parade pays homage to the Coney Island Mardi Gras parades of the early 20th century."

"The tradition of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade began in 1983, when the first event of this kind was conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun, who is sometimes dubbed the "Mayor of Coney Island", and who was the founder of the non-profit arts group Coney Island USA."
