So for two years now I've been using sulfates and silicone free shampoo/conditioner, and I'm happy with the health of my hair, but it's gotten so frizzy! It's as if I have an halo of frizz on the top layer of my hair, ugh

If you haven't recently... I'd first suggest a trim. Then maybe a vinegar rinse to start.
I use honey, aloe, avocado, coconut oil or just plain olive oil as a 'deep' conditioner once per week. (tried almond oil and it was soooo ugh with the smell) You are probably right about the protein. Too much can do the reverse of what you want it to do. Maybe just use it once every couple of weeks and get a lighter leave in conditioner to use daily. I sometimes will just not rinse all the conditioner out of my hair and let that be my styling product.
Coconut oil can be used for styling but in my case I have found that it really causes my hair to be greasy (and it's not usually)
Since you know about the sulfates/silicones and not towel drying I'm going to assume you know about the benefits of decreased washing occurrences and not brushing your hair or touching it while it's almost dry and dry which can increase the frizz factor.
yeah, I've been pretty good with washing my hair twice a week, minimizing heat styling, etc. My hair is thick and shiny and feels strong, but damn, that frizz.
Thanks for the oils suggestion, I was looking into more natural solutions other than olive oil (don't like the smell and no matter how long I rinse it leaves my hair kinda greasy)
There's a trick to getting oil out of your hair... most people don't even think about it because they're so used to wetting their hair to rinse. Oil and water don't mix.
Put shampoo on first to break the oil bonds, then rinse. Usually, it only takes one rinse that way. I usually deep condition, then wash and light leave in.
Vinegar also works, and some swear by conditioner before water, then rinsing, then shampoo. I do well with a vinegar rinse after a shampoo, sometimes two rinses if I've put too much oil in. Shampoo first and conditioner first don't work for me.
I like coconut oil as a deep condition - I drench my hair in it for a while before a shower. It does the job really well, but it's difficult to rinse out and is quite heavy. Jojoba oil has worked much better as a daily touch-up for my frizz. I just comb a few drops in, and it doesn't have the greasiness or scent of CO.
Protein might be your problem, but also likely is you've just got hair that needs some weight to tame it. While hair is shorter as it's just growing it sticks out, but settles down once it gets long and heavy enough. Oils or aloe should work pretty well for you. If you are going sulfate free, be really careful reading products to avoid anything with -cones as they can be really tricky to get rid of with sulfate free products
