you should apply it before you bike in the morning, and then again before you bike home

I agree with the above. It's about time.

It loses it's effect due to perspiration and chemicals released in your skin. Even if you don't think it's necessary because you're not "sweaty".

I'm a professional driver, and I have to apply a couple of times a day because the sunlight streams in the side windows - I get pretty warm, and by the end of summer one arm is much darker than the other, and the freckles on one side of my face are more pronounced than the other side.

Also, despite the fact that it's cloudy, you still will be exposed to UV rays. They may be less than the middle of summer, but it's still important to wear sunscreen in summer AND winter.

I agree with the above, reapply your sunscreen. An easy way to tell how quickly you'll need to apply is take your sunscreen SPF x the number of minutes you'd burn without sunscreen. I burn in about 5 minutes in summer, maybe a bit longer in winter though, so my SPF 15 sunscreen will last me 15 x 5 minutes, or an hour and 15 minutes. That's with perfect application and the sunscreen not wearing down due to sweat or being wiped/rinsed off. Keep that in mind as the maximum it'll last. Also, I've heard that anything beyond an SPF 50 is rather pointless, so despite the fact that my spf 50 will last me 250 minutes or over 4 hours, I always reapply after an hour or two anyway.

HTH!

Great reply, thanks. I have no idea how soon my skin would burn without sunscreen. Is your skin very pale/are you pretty sensitive to sunlight? Or is 5 mins fairly normal?
