Yeah, as long as you haven't used a significant amount of the product they will take it back without hesitation. And no, they don't resell it, it becomes a "defective" product.

This. It's damaged out as a customer return & likely listed as "destroyed in-field."

Ask for samples of both primers.

Yes, they have a very relaxed return policy. They'll take opened products back with or without a receipt. I've never had any problems returning anything. They don't resell used products.

oooo, samples!

so, if i ask for a sample, will it be like an individual little sealed packet that i can take home with me and use with my regular makeup? or will they just expect me to try some from the grody communal sample product in the store?

A lot of the time they take it out of the sample product in the store. The primers are largely in pump bottles which are sanitary and not what I would ever refer to as "grody".

oh, yay, that's good to hear. sorry, i'm a little weird about makeup samples because i've seen people do gross stuff like take the sample tube of lipstick and rub it right on their mouth. yuck.

I wouldn't recommend smashbox photo finish primer if you have oily skin. I bought it and tried it out and my skin is only mildly oily and even that was enough for me to hate it. Read the reviews here: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemId=6572/Photo_Finish_Primer/Smashbox/Primer/_Corrector

[1] Smashbox has a few different primers. They do make an oil free version of their primer. I do suggest looking at reviews though. The oil free version broke me out really awfully (my skin is combo and while I don't break out a lot often, it happens occasionallly). I am currently switching between NARS oil free primer and Hourglass primer. Hourglass is pricey but you need a really small amount - in fact, if I use too much, it doesn't work well at all. Sephora re-did their Sephora products a year or so ago, and they are significantly better than they were (they sucked before). I haven't tried their primer, so now thoughts there (I find that Makeup Alley has better reviews than Sephora). You can also get samples in store, which is nice. I suggest getting a few samples and trying them out at home to see how they work for you. Boscia also makes a good primer, but I just like the other two I'm using better right now ( ... )

I have the oiliest skin of anyone I know, and the Urban Decay De-Slick primer has become my new passion. I wish it was made/I had known about it YEARS ago.

It's great. I use it with the entire de-slick line (the gel, primer, and translucent powder, because my skin is IMPOSSIBLE). You may need all, some, or none of these, but these products actually WORK and that's the first time I've been able to say that about anything.
