If someone murders someone but then they're sorry about it, what would you think?

That's kind of a weird question, don'tcha think?

Well, guess it depends why they killed'em...

Maybe.

Oh, guess I should have said that. It's not because of a war or anything, they just... do it. For no real reason.

I dunno, then. I mean, I guess if they're really sorry... But still. It's pretty heavy business, killin' someone like that.

Doesn't that lead to the question of whether killing in general is right or wrong?

...If someone kills someone for whatever reason there will be someone who is upset over it.

Well, I think most people think killing in general is wrong, right?

I think most people will say it's wrong under certain circumstances...if a person did it because their own life was threatened some people might say it's acceptable.

... Yeah, that makes sense. Self-defense is different. Same with wars and stuff.

Then they shouldn't have killed anyone in the first place. There's no position for a heart in a situation like that. Don't kill someone unless you can handle it.

I don't think people should kill other people at all. I guess the exception would be if they're a soldier in a war or something, but still.

So you think feeling sorry about it just makes it worse?

People fight for a variety of reasons. Soldiers in war. Defense. Rage and loathing. There are many shades of grey.

That's right. Feeling anything in that position implies vulnerability. You can't protect anything, much less yourself, when you're vulnerable.

Fighting just because you're angry isn't right.

But... isn't everybody vulnerable sometimes?

If they sincerely regret their crimes and wish to atone, I see no problem with giving them the benefit of the doubt.

You wouldn't put them in jail or anything?

We don't have the resources to waste on that needlessly.

That's true.

So how would they be punished?

It would depend upon the situation. For example, whether it was murder or self-defence, or whether this person was genuinely remorseful or not.

Not self defense, and not because of a war. It was just murder.

... I think they are. Really sorry, I mean.

While death is not a permanent event here, it is nonetheless a serious offence that disrupts what exists of society here. As such, it has certain consequences, even if they are not the same as those of the worlds we are each from.

If those who have committed such acts are sincere about their regrets, then, while punishment is still necessary, it should not be as severe as for those who express no such remorse. I believe some manner of service where they are charged with caring for a life, such as assisting Mistress Yorda in the greenhouse or perhaps caring for livestock at the barn, might be appropriate.

... It's not permanent? What do you mean?
