Slowly Yoseob began to gain consciousness; he was waking up to the sound of his ringtone. ‘Ugh… What the heck, who’s calling now of all times? Aish.’ He hates it when people call him in the middle of the night; especially when he was sleeping so peacefully in his comfy bed. With his eyes still shut, he tried to reach for his cellphone, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t move his arms; in fact, he couldn’t even move at all and realized that his arms and legs were bound together.

Yoseob’s eyes flew open only to find the same darkness as when his eyes were closed. He realized he wasn’t in his bed or in his room; rather, he was tied to an uncomfortable chair in some place he didn’t recognize. He frantically tried to undo the bounds around his wrists, but it was useless. ‘Shit. Shit. Where the hell am I?!’ He sought desperately in his head for answers and then he remembered. He remembered that stupid fight with Doojoon, and then after that he just felt numb with pain and hurt. He recalled bumping into some strange people and hiding behind a dingy fence. And then… And then he just ran and ran for dear life. He couldn’t remember anything past that and it was frustrating. All he knows is that right now he’s probably in some big trouble and his head was throbbing in pain.
He crinkled his nose in distaste as the smell of cigarettes and alcohol permeated throughout the room. He squint his eyes to try to adjust to the darkness of the room and he took in of what he could barely see of his surroundings. The door was easily recognizable since there was a faint light emanating from the cracks of it, almost like an outline. There was also a pale beam of moonlight coming from the window. He concluded that he was in some kind of basement since the window seemed so high up in the wall and the fact that he could sort of see the ground outside. As far as he could tell, there was nothing much in it except a small desk and a few other chairs.

And there goes his phone again. He desperately wished he could answer it and tell the caller to help him. ‘Maybe, maybe I could wiggle it out of my pocket…’ He thought as he started squirming around on the chair to see if his phone would fall out of his pocket, but it was a futile attempt. All of the moving around just made his head hurt more and his bounds somehow felt tighter. Yoseob could feel his eyes water at the thought of never being able to escape from this condemned place, the thought of never seeing his friends and family, and the thought of never seeing Doojoon again. Oh gosh, if he knew that it was the last time that he would ever see him again, then he wouldn’t have had that stupid fight. It was ridiculous; he didn’t even remember what they were fighting about.
His thoughts lingered a while longer on pessimistic scenarios until he heard the familiar sound of his ringtone yet again. Honestly, he was getting frustrated because his call for help is so close, yet he can’t do anything. However, he realized that he wasn’t alone when he heard noises outside of the door.
“That stupid kid’s phone is ringing again. Can’t we smash it or something? The ringtone is fucking annoying.”
“No, idiot. You know what the boss said.”
“Ugh. What the hell does she want with him anyways…”
“Yah!!” Yoseob managed to yell out as loud as he can. “Let me go!” He yelled at the closed door and all he got in response was silence, but then suddenly he heard some chairs shifting and someone mumble, “Great, he’s awake.” He watched as two men opened the door, letting a stream of light fill the room. One of them looked cocky and aggressive and the other sneered at Yoseob. “Hey kid, why don’t you shut the fuck up? Huh?” He said in a deep and threatening voice.
Yoseob only scoffed back in anger. He wasn’t scared of these creeps; at least he thought he wasn’t. “No! Let me go!” He yelled again as he started squirming around in his chair once more to try and see if he could loosen up the bounds. This only caused the men to get more irritated at him. “Stop moving around kid before I hurt you.” One of them threatened. Yoseob could only roll his eyes; he thought it was a baseless threat. They weren’t really going to hurt him, right?
“Yeah, right. You’re not going to hurt me.” Yoseob denied. “Why capture me and then leave me here only to hurt me? That’s stupid.” He explained. It wasn’t a very good explanation; in fact, now that he actually thought about what he had said, it didn’t even make sense. ‘Oh great, way to embarrass yourself in front of these idiots. They’re probably thinking how stupid I am now. Ugh.’ He said to himself as he cautiously waited for the men’s reactions.
Both men started to laugh in ridicule as they made their way closer to Yoseob. “You don’t think we could hurt you?” One of them leered at him as he reached into his jacket as if to pull something out. “N-no…” He answered back. They couldn’t hurt him without their boss around, right? That weirdo lady. She must have told them to leave him alone, but he couldn’t help but feel like she wasn’t so nice to do so. It was obvious that he was starting to lose his confidence again.
He waited and watched as the man pulled out a gun from his jacket. Yeah, a freaking gun. Yoseob would have practically fallen out of his chair if he wasn’t tied to it. But since he couldn’t, he opted to open his eyes really big in surprise. “W-what are you going to do with that?!” He squeaked in fear. Surely they weren’t going to shoot him, right? Right?! ‘Oh god. Oh god. Oh my freaking god. I’m dead. I am so dead.’ He repeated in his head over and over. He quickly shut his eyes in fear as he felt the point of the slick and cold metal rest on his right temple. Tears were already rolling down his face as he heard the click of the safety being pulled back and the malevolent laugher of the men pulsating throughout the room. ‘Fuck. I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die.’ He pleaded to no one in particular. ‘Oh god. Someone save me from these lunatics!’
As if on cue, the melody of Beast’s hit song “Mystery” resonated throughout the heavy and thick air of the dark room. Yoseob felt the offending weapon move away from his head and opened his eyes. He blinked away hushed tears to see the two men frown at the noise. “Ah, what the heck? Your stupid phone is really annoying. Ruined our fun.” The man tried to pout, but it looked more scary and ridiculous than anything else. Yoseob couldn’t say anything. He was still in shock and fright from being so close to death itself. He felt a bit relieved and thanked whoever was calling, but his fear was only heightened once more when the gun somehow found its way to his head again. “Don’t move.” He heard the man with the gun say as the other one searched Yoseob. He couldn’t help but want to shake and cry as the men looked through his cellphone. He wanted to scream and shout or do something as they violated what little privacy he already had, but he knew he couldn’t, you know, unless he decided that his life wasn’t worth living for, and he was pretty sure that he didn’t want to end his life right at that moment.
“Ah, who the heck is this guy? Look.” The man showed his partner the call history list on Yoseob’s phone. “Five missed calls all from the same guy and all within this hour too.” They both laughed and shoved the LCD screen to Yoseob’s face so he could see it. “Must be worried about you, too bad he won’t be getting any calls back tonight.” Yoseob saw the caller ID and it was Doojoon. He was the one who has been calling this whole time. Was he really worried about him though? Maybe he was just calling because he’s pissed off that he’s not home yet, or maybe he just wanted to yell at him some more. He couldn’t help but think negative things, after all, Doojoon was the one who told him that he didn’t love him, told him that he hated seeing his face and hearing his voice. There shouldn’t be any other reason why he would call such a person that he apparently loathed so much.
The two men dropped the phone to the ground and were about to smash it. He didn’t want to lose his phone. All of his precious pictures, messages and contacts were in it. Besides, if he were to lose it now then he would never get the chance to call for help, well, it wasn’t like he had a chance before, but it gave him a little hope at least. Yoseob couldn’t help but want to stop them. He opened his mouth and was about to shout, but someone beat him to it.
“Stop.” The mysterious voice demanded. Yoseob recognized the voice; it was that woman from before. He looked in her direction but he couldn’t see her clearly because her face was hidden behind shadows. The effect only made her more mysterious and scary. “What do you think you’re doing?” She questioned the men in anger. Clearly she had told them to do something, or rather not to do something, and they did it anyways.
The two men quickly stopped what they were doing and glanced at each other. “Err… We were just having some fun, Boss.” One of them answered, and soon the other chimed in also. “Yeah, we didn’t hurt him or anything, we were just messing around, you know?” The guy said as he waved his gun around. “Look, my gun isn’t even loaded.” He pointed the gun at Yoseob and pulled the trigger only to reveal that the gun was indeed unloaded.
Yoseob stared wide eyed at the gun pointed at him and gave a little jump when the trigger was pulled. When he realized that nothing had happened tears began rolling down his face again, except this time they weren’t tears of fear, but of anger and resentment. ‘Bastards!’ He thought. ‘Toying with me this whole time! Who the hell gave them the right to make me think that they could end my life?! Almost thought I was going to die! Ugh!’ He blinked away his tears as he glared at the offending pair. “You fucking jerks!” He shouted. He was going to continue to rant, but stopped when he heard the woman step forward. He turned his head towards her direction and saw that she had stepped out of the shadow and was pissed off. He didn’t know whether or not she was pissed off at him or at the two buffoons, but whatever the reason Yoseob could see her slick dark eyes swimming with such authority and annoyance that he wanted to go cower in some corner.
Her arms were crossed as her intense eyes stared her two men down. Obviously, the men were much larger and taller than she is, but somehow her presence just made them look small and puny. “Get out.” She simply ordered and the two men were scrambling out the door without a second glance. The sound of her heels clicking echoed throughout the room as she walked over to close the door and to turn on some dingy old light. The room was still overpowered by the darkness because the light was so dim, but it was better than nothing.
Yoseob watched as she picked up his phone and made her way over to a nearby chair. She sat down cross legged and just stared at him with a mysterious smirk. This only made him feel uncomfortable if he wasn’t already. ‘Ah… What is up with this lady? She’s freaking scary. Should I say something? Ugh, what if she goes ballistic on me?’ Questions like these ran through his head as he stared at the ground and tried to ignore her staring, but he decided to say something and see what would happen.
He looked back up and stared back at her. Her gaze was unfaltering while Yoseob’s gaze was quickly gathering nervousness and fear. “What do you want with me?” He asked quietly.
There it is again, that unnerving smirk, he swore it could drive people crazy. “Nothing.” She answered. “I don’t want anything from you. You can give me nothing. But, oh, I bet you’re worth something to your silly company of yours, Cube, is it?” Her red lips curled into a smile as she watched Yoseob’s face drop in despair.
“W-what?” He questioned in disbelief. “Huh? I think you have the wrong person… What the hell is Cube?” He denied. It was clear to him that all this woman wanted was money and that she was going to use him to get it, but he’s not going to let her, not without a fight. Well, actually, he hopes there isn’t a fight.
“Don’t play stupid with me, kid. Your name is Yang Yoseob, you’re a member of an idol group called Beast and is from Cube Entertainment. No?” She elaborated. “Don’t try to deceive me. I know far more than you think.” Out of nowhere she pulled out a wallet and tossed it to Yoseob’s feet. He quickly recognized it as his own wallet. ‘Ugh. Great. Why do I put so much things in there?’ He frowned. “Whatever. You’re not going to get what you want lady. If you’re going to try and threaten the company, they’re just going to call the police and then you’re going to get arrested. But if you let me go, I won’t tell anyone and then you won’t be arrested.” He tried to bargain.
The woman lightly chuckled. “Don’t be silly. Your company won’t call the police and I won’t be arrested. I’ve got my ways.” She said as she looked through Yoseob’s pictures in his phone. Even in the dim light, Yoseob could see her eyes twinkle in delight as she looked at them. “These are perfect for blackmail, don’t you think?” She asked as she held the phone up for Yoseob to see. It was a picture of him and Doojoon making out. There were tons more of those kinds of pictures on his phone. If they were released to the public there would be a really big scandal and besides ruining the images of both him and Doojoon, it would also ruin Beast’s image and maybe even their whole career as a whole.
“Hn. Don’t worry. I’m not going to use them, yet.” She reassured him, but how trusting can she be? “If my first plan backfires then I guess I will have to resort to these.” She waved the phone around. “I think my first plan would be much better.”
Yoseob was about to ask what her stupid plan was, but got interrupted by his phone, yet again. It was probably Doojoon again. This was the sixth time he tried to call him, right? He thought the woman was going to end the call, but to his surprise, she answered it.
“Hello?” She said into the phone. Yoseob could hear Doojoon talking on the other line, but he couldn’t really make out what he was saying. He watched as she softly laughed mockingly and replied “no.” What were the two talking about it? Yoseob wondered.
“YAH! DOOJOON HELP ME!” Yoseob yelled to try and see if Doojoon could hear him. “HELP! THESE CRAZY PEOPLE KIDN-” His call for help was abruptly stopped when he felt a piece of cloth cover his mouth. He turned around to see one of the men from earlier tying the cloth to the back of his head. “Mmphhmmph!” He tried to yell again, but his voice was muffled. “Kid. Keep quiet.” The man said to him as the oh so infamous gun was again held to his head. He wondered if it was actually loaded this time.
“Me? You needn’t worry about me.” She replied into the phone as she watched Yoseob struggle in his chair. “Why don’t we switch to video call, hm?” Without waiting for an answer she moved the cellphone away from her ear and pressed a button. She waited as the person on the other line switched to video call also. She quickly recognized the young man as the one who was in the pictures she saw earlier. Her plan was going great, she thought.
-----
“Who are you? Where’s Yoseob?” Doojoon demanded again. He thought he heard some yelling earlier, and it only made him worry. He couldn’t see the person’s face very well since it was kind of dark on her side, but he knew it was someone he didn’t know.
“Don’t worry. He’s right here.” He heard her reply and saw the video move around and stop on a figure. “Y-Yoseob?” He questioned as he saw the familiar head of blonde. He saw that Yoseob was tied to a chair and that he was gagged by a piece of cloth. ‘What, what is this? What’s happening?’ He asked himself as he noticed that Yoseob’s face was streaked with tears and that there was a gun held to his head. The feeling of fear and guilt swam through his eyes as he watched Yoseob helplessly try to say something but was muffled. “Yoseob!” He yelled just when the video was being moved to show the woman again. “What the hell did you do to him?!” Oh, he was angry now. “You better not hurt him or I’m going to kill you bastards!” He shouted, not even caring that the other members were probably asleep, but knowing them they wouldn’t have woken up.
He heard the woman laugh as he fumed in anger and resentment. “Calm down.” She said. “Lets make a deal, shall we?”
Doojoon scoffed. “Why the hell would I make a deal with you for? Let Yoseob go! Where are you?!” He couldn’t control his anger and fear. Doojoon could handle many things, but this. This is completely off the hook. He was actually scared this time.
“I told you to calm down. I want 11 billion won ($10 million USD) by this Friday.” She demanded. “If you don’t comply and call the authorities then we will blow his head off. Understand?” She said as she motioned towards the gun being held to Yoseob’s head. “And if you do comply, but end up not getting the money, we will still kill him. So either way, get the money or you will lose him.” She threatened.
“W-what? Are you crazy?! You can’t do this!” He shouted. “Where am I supposed to get that much money in two days?” He questioned in disbelief. This woman was seriously crazy. Was she really going to kill Yoseob? She couldn’t really, right? Right?!
“Hn. Don’t kid yourself. I am not joking.” She answered as if she had read Doojoon’s mind. “Bring 11 billion won at 6pm sharp this Friday to the bridge at the Han River. We will bring your precious Yoseob there. If you don’t show up or try something fishy then we will shoot him and throw his body into the river. You have to come alone, there will be consequences if you we see someone with you. You got that?” Without waiting for an answer she held the phone towards Yoseob. “Say byebye to each other.” She mocked. “This might be the last time.” And with that, she ended the call.
“W-wait!” Doojoon yelled in a desperate attempt to continue the call, but it was too late. The call already ended. ‘What… What just happened?’ He asked himself in disbelief like this was some terrible nightmare, too bad it was a reality. In such a short conversation, his world was already falling apart. What could he do to save Yoseob? Get the money? That would be impossible. It was already Wednesday and she wanted it by Friday. Where the heck is he supposed to get that much money in a span of two days? He frowned. The situation had taken a turn for the worse. How did it end up like this? It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
The image of Yoseob being helpless with a gun held to his head still lingered in his mind. If he lost Yoseob he didn’t know what he would do. If he lost Yoseob then his future days would only be filled with darkness, hate and guilt. Already in the past few hours that Yoseob was gone the rooms seemed darker and bland than they actually were even though they were fully lit.
Abruptly, he stood up and grabbed his jacket and prepared to head out the door. It was already really, really late but he couldn’t go to sleep now. He was going to try and find Yoseob. Even if it takes all night, or in this case, all morning.
