accents

Last night bear_left called me to discuss our plans next week. At some point we got talking about border crossings, Customs officials, and during our conversation I noticed and remarked on his New York City accent.

It reminded of a trip I took, almost 5 years ago, to visit pagerbear, during which we spent a few days visiting NYC (and picked up a case of food ( Read more... )

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that my mother had a boyfriend in Ontario in 2001.

Of course, she would never have brought her baptismal certificate, but probably her driver's license.

I distinctly remember this lady showing a baptismal certificate, and telling me at one point earlier about being catholic (and that it was important to her, although she was also very liberal in attitude).

Oh, I have no doubt that the lady in question did show her baptismal certificate. My mom wouldn't, that's all.

My God, that does sound like your mother. I sound practically like a native Southerner compared to her, as do you.

In my phone interview today, they asked me the required questions about my eligibility to work in the U.S./citizenship status, & I made a crack about my Brooklyn accent. I wouldn't have done it except for being friends with three of the four people interviewing me, but it got a huge laugh. I don't think I'll try that next Thursday though when I cross the border.

Somehow, I imagine this woman popping him in the gut if he didn't let her in. But such may be my stereotype of Brooklyners. The people I know from Brooklyn have all been tough.

She wasn't going to take no for an answer, that was for sure. She was nice enough to me though, and bought me coffee from the snack bar during the long trip.

That was certainly nice of her, although in my rampant imaginary mind, are you sure she wasn't trying to pick you up? (G)

Not likely...she had a boyfriend in Toronto and was older than me (late 30's i'd guess, and I was 27 at the time). I think she was just being neighbourly.
