I'm just gonna quote a whole tumblr entry by ctcsherry (I think her LJ and DA usernames are the same) because I agree with all of it. Especially that bit about icons:

It really puzzles me why people even forget credit something when it's RIGHT THERE and EASY in tumblr. Just a click or something.

(I've had my plushie pictures pop up in fanpop with no credits. That was just...bizarre. I've had some icons I haven't credited the art because I don't know the art source, but when I do know, I put credits. /shifty eyes)

"I've had some icons I haven't credited the art because I don't know the art source, but when I do know, I put credits."

Same here. All it takes is one person to not credit an image, purposely or accidentally. A visitor then takes or links to that image, not knowing the original creator, and so on and so forth until Tiny Tim visiting Icon-Bases-R-Us can't credit the original artist even if he wanted to. I'm not saying it justifies no crediting, but I want people to keep that in mind when confronting someone.

"It only bugs me even more that people are actively crediting those who make icons, but not the artists the icons are cropped from."

This bothers me. Icon communities often stress crediting the icon/base creator but don't push crediting the actual artist/photographer. Icon creators meanwhile can get very possessive of their cropped, re-sized, font covered, manipulated images, but can they "own" something they took from someone else?

Thank you so so so so much for posting this, sometimes I think I'm the only person who thinks this stuff. I don't reblog something if the source isn't provided or I can't find it myself. I see the non-crediting happening more with Japanese artists, who are getting really touchy about it and have been putting up notices in Japanese and English about sharing their art without crediting for years. I made a post on Tumblr a little while back with some good resources for finding the sources of pictures, but no one reblogged it (probably because I only have like nine followers).

egh idk. I didn't mean for my first comment on your LJ to sound so preachy, going back to lurking now.

Beanie my username never changes OTZ

Ididn't mention about photographs in my post but I get so angry when people reblogs all these beautiful photos from flickr without source, in puny low res, and takes all the credit of maintaining "a beautiful blog". Photographers might not sit in front of a desk to draw, but they need to travel all the way to where they take photos! They carry the weight of their gears for great distances, wait hours for the perfect shot and spent hours post-processing.

Another time I got super angry at a blogger for blogging medical illustrations from textbook or med illust companies (illegal, totally). Heck this is a small field and I pretty much recognize every single picture on that blog. All the followers now view the blogger as a medical doctor and shower them with praises, it's just...revolting.

I was really tired of people take credit for things they didn't spent any effort on. Glad you and every other artists felt the same.

I'm just able to agree.
It is awful that people - also randomly in forums - use fanart or photography of others without crediting them. I am usually the 'bad' person who tells them that they should credit and sometimes I am even 'worse' for I tell them that they don't have the written permission and as long as they don't have the permission NOR write down who is the original creator - it is actually art theft.
It is awful that most people do not seem to care who did what and how much work was spent creating this piece of art they love so much.
