Making stuff - a poll

Jul 20, 2006 13:44

I've just started a new painting class, and it has me wondering about being creative - which means, as usual, that it's time to bother you good people.

Regardless of your chosen area of creativity (and I can already see some of you out there smirking; you KNOW what I'm talking about), I'd love to see answers on whichever questions appeal.

1. Scrapbooking and photography. The two go hand in hand, really.

2. Not as much as I would like! ;) When my girls are in school, I usually spend one day a week scrapping.

3. I would say somewhere in between beginner and intermediate for the photography, and in between intermediate and competent for the scrapbooking. My photography skills could really benefit from a class of some sort, but I've been scrapping long enough that my project usually turn out pretty much the way I want them.

4. Any goals? Not really. I just don't ever want to lose the passion I have for these two hobbies.

5. No and No

6. It's a bit of both really.

I did one scrapbook (of professorial summits ;), and enjoyed it a lot. Do you process/print your own shots, or send them out?

Oooh! I would pay good money to see that scrapbook! ;D

I take my film to my local Sam's Club for their One Hour service. They do a pretty good job, and I don't have to buy the prints I don't want. I would like to get into printing them out myself eventually.

1. Painter

2. 50-60 hours depending - some weeks I can only give 10-30 hours due to other projects butting in

3. Intermediate - I’ll always have more to learn

4. My goal would be to expand the exposure of my work to more venues online and in person

5. Making money at this point is a figure of speech. I am comfortably in the black at the moment, but I couldn’t pay rent, eat, and buy clothes off the money generated. I CAN buy frames, paints, canvases, marketing materials, and a few bits of clothing and a few choice meals with friends.

6. An art, only because it’s a traditional form. Some of what I do (wearable prints) would likely fall under “fine crafts”

I think it's great that you're able to make your art more than pay for itself (as I've said before, I really love your work - you've got such a definite style). A friend rides horses/boards/gives lessons, and she once told me she thinks the first thing you should do when you realize you're serious about a trade or an art or a craft is to figure out how to make it pay for as much of itself as possible. She doesn't fully support herself (yet) with horses, either, but she's able to write off enough to keep it in the black as well.

I wondered about the 'fine crafts' part and had a look at your site - the pendants are fantastic - the art translates very well.

Thanks for your response!
