If I remember correctly one of the recipes in the museum cookbook was one of my Auntie Fern's. she was one of the original volunteers and what not of the museum. She was a legend there. I keep forgetting to join up with the nordic museum since I am eligible like woah to be one of them. When the place was an elementary school my Aunt's girls went there. My cousin said it was so weird to be in what had been her school gym for her Mother's memorial. I wanted to hit that up today but I became distracted with cooking and stuff. My Mother said something about the nordic museum having some big conference of knitters there soon.
aw crap- if I had known I would have called you/picked you up! :/
I think I heard that- I think that when I found out it was too late though. Luckily I'm not too late for Madrona. I'm taking only two classes @ Madrona this year but they are both Elsbeth Lavold's so - Nordic knitting ahoy!
I've never been to the Nordic Heritage Museum and I've been in Seattle since 1997. I have gone for Swedish pancakes at the Swedish Cultural Center. They do that once a month and it is old school.
actually that Bohus class i took in the summer was pretty thorough. I made a ocuple of swatches that I should put up at some point. Everytime I do colourwork I'm like "Oh this isn't as hard as I thought" I actually did ask for a Bohus kit (wild apple!) for Xmas from www.solsilke.se- that's the one that the teacher of the class (and also the organizer of the upcoming Bohus exhibit at the Swedish Inst. in Mpls.) recommended. I was hoping for Selbuvotter-type things since the lady who wrote the book did most of her research at the Nordic Hist. Museum! But no dice. :(
Hee no lefse is awesome flatbread-type rollups made from potato. It's lovely. I have to call my aunt back in MN and get her to get me some from the lady she works with that makes a bunch around the holidays every year. I always forget to ask her to order me a bunch and freeze it so I can enjoy back here.
Gods there are days I miss living in Norway so much. Today, with my rumbling tummy at the thought of all the tasty treats, is turning out to be one of them...
That sounds like it was lots of fun! I love visiting the Swedish Inst. in Minneapolis around Christmas every year. I have no idea what the Norwegians do though. I'd make you some lefse only I don't have the necessary tools. And actually I don't like it unless it's smothered in butter and cinnamon-sugar. But I really like all the Scandinavian cookies :)
I need to make some Scandi cookies in my Xmas cookie frenzy scheduled very soon! this year. I made about 6 different kinds last year!
The Swedish Inst. is going to have this awesome bohus knitting exhibit in late Jan early feb next year- I took a knitting class from the woman who is setting it all up in the summer this year. I wish I could go! :(
I would love to get a lefse grill and try my hand at it. :)
