If there's one thing I've learned from BSG, it's that navigating around the galaxy by only using landmarks is exceedingly difficult. Kara is trying to do exactly that, along with her "feelings". I think it's going to be a very long time before Earth is found.
That being said, she does have a few astronomical clues that may prove useful. The first and most important one is the "triple flashing star". I think this would most probably be
Alpha Centauri, although the Alpha Centauri system doesn't "flash". I can't think of any "flashing" triple stars in our neighborhood, though.
The next clue is a "ringed gas giant". My initial guess is that this is Saturn, although the articles I've read are leaning towards it being Jupiter (I don't understand why, as Jupiter's rings aren't nearly as visible as Saturn's).
The last clue is "a comet". Of the three clues, this one is the most vague. My initial guess is Haley's Comet, but there are thousands of other candidates that frequently visit the inner Solar System from the Oort cloud. It could be one of a great number of comets.
Any thoughts from the amateur backyard astronomers out there?
