So apparently, there was one thing Saddam Hussein did right: his secular government's policy regarding homosexuality was "don't ask, don't tell."

Indeed.

Though, are you really surprised? Obviously not all Iraqis are wacko religious freaks who think terrorism is okay, but most of them are still very religious, and naturally said religion looks down on homosexuality.

I think part of bringing democracy to their country (not that I agree with the war, though Sadaam did need to get his ass killed) is to open up their culture socially as well as politically. This obviously isn't going to make all the homophobes change their opinions, but hopefully, in time, it will make a difference.
