I think there was some benefit of having to written the script when I was so young. One, I was far enough away that I didn’t feel strange about changing things. I was very open to the fact it was more than 10 years later and it was worth reevaluating.
I wish CB and CT were as open-minded and willing to reevaluate their almost decade old AU finale script as Jason was with his own work. :(
This is a little off topic. I read an EW interview with Parks and Recreation exec producer Mike Schur in which he discussed the show's next and last season. What he said reminded me of the HIMYM finale and how much CB/CT royally screwed up. Here is what he said (I'm posting it behind a spoiler tag to be safe and so as to not upset any Parks and Rec fans visiting here): [Possible spoilers!]
The show has been known to take big risks with its stories. Does the fact that we’re three years into the future and this is now the last season mean that you might be taking even more risks than usual? Please tell me you’re not going to kill Jerry/Larry/Terry.No, I don’t think we’

You're right, that does sound awfully familiar. If there's one positive thing we can gain out of the "finale" it's that other showrunners might look at it as some sort of cautionary tale.
Wouldn't surprise me if he's actually refering to HIMYM, it's exactly what CB/CT did (or not did), can't be coincidence.
Can't help but think that anyone who's creative and knows how to write can rewrite an ending of a TV series when it's no longer relevant to the story. Anyone with the knowledge of writing anything knows that you should change a ending when it doesn't go with the rest of the series. If CB/CT weren't so into their 10 year old "Original ending* we would be saying different things two months later. But, no they wanted to stick with that and end it when the TRUE VIEWERS OF THIS SHOW KNOW FULL WELL WHAT WENT ON FOR 9 SEASONS.
Telling a story is one thing but erasing an entire 9 season show in the span of one hour was the absolute worst thing they did in the 9 seasons of that show. And I agree, if you're doing flashforwards at least give us something more positive and IN character and not completely erase an entire almost decades worth of TV.
There is a very high possibility that it is not even the original ending. They wrote it months after their first emergency exit in 1.13. Also PF didn't directed the scene with the kids but as she said herself she knew the hole concept right from the start, that just didn't make any sense unless they changed the ending at the end of S1. So CTCB not only changed the ending but also let the show run as if nothing happened. With that they betrayed not only the audience but also their own cast and crew.
Another thing I wanted to talk about, that is also a little bit off topic, is "How I Met Your Dad." Hopefully that show won't get picked up by NBC, Fox, or Netflix (the places it's being shopped to now). I want CB and CT to fail miserably and feel extremely disappointed (kind of like how the majority of HIMYM's audience felt after that dreadful AU finale aired). Recently, I was thinking about a possible twist they might pull if HIMYD was picked up. It was mentioned in a couple other threads that a French critic's review of the Pilot episode contained some spoilers. In case the show does get picked up, I'm going to post behind a spoiler tag just to be safe. [Spoilers!] The critic said the titular dad was revealed to be Frank at the end of the episode. He also said that during the episode Todd and Danny are excited because they are expecting to be parents soon; however, it is revealed later by Future Sally that the woman who was going to give them her baby changes her mind after she gives birth. Future Todd and Future Danny are heartbroken. So, I

On the HIMYD spoiler: [Spoiler (click to open)]I somehow missed the Danny/Tom part when I read the French review. That is horribly depressing. No wonder CBS decided not to pick it up. Seriously, WTF CTCB.. Agree with you in that I'm glad no one's picked it up. And I'm glad that they've become a cautionary tale for showrunners on what NOT to do.
The movie Cobie is in looks adorable, though. But I love Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.
I never would have watched that show anyway after what they did to HIMYM (it didn't sound of any interest to me even before that) but what on earth is up with these two? (A) Why do they think that weird, nonsensical plot twists are awesome instead of just disconnected storytelling?; and (B) Why do they want to keep throwing in horribly depressing and bleak plot twists? Are these guys sadists? Why do they think the public will enjoy this? I realize they produced HIMYD before the HIMYM backlash (after that point they certainly should have known better), but you've got to wonder about writers who keep having the same terrible, depressing type things repeatedly crop up in their writing. Are they just so immature as writers that they think the only way to make an impact on your audience is to do horrible, shocking things out of nowhere? I just really don't understand it.
Yeah, I don't understand it either. I agree that they have to be sadists. It's the only explanation that makes sense as to why they do the things they do.
They Come Together looks good, now I know where the image of Cobie in lingerie came from. I love Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, this should be interesting. Jason's book, lol I love him and feel the same way. Truthfully it is scary but does stick with you on your mind.
To be honest, I'm rather surprised Nick@Nite is picking up HIMYM. I've seen some of their programming at various times when I'm up all night ill and the like, and all of their shows are very family oriented. HIMYM frankly seems a bit adult for their type of programming. Then again, I never quite understood that anyway because these programs are sometimes in primetime but many literally air in the overnight hours so it's not like families are watching this with kids anyway. On cable the overnight hours are a time when anything goes (seriously, they can say any swear word and even show all-out nudity on basic cable after a certain hour). So I guess it makes sense, and you know I love HIMYM. It just seemed a surprising choice for that network considering some of its content
( ... )
I know for the past year Nick@Nite has been airing Friends, which is similar comedy-wise (sex jokes, etc.) to HIMYM. So, based on HIMYM's content, I'm not that surprised that Nick@Nite picked it up; however, I am a little surprised that it picked up HIMYM right after its original run ended. It just feels too soon for HIMYM to be on a channel that airs TV classics. I feel like Nick@Nite should have waited 8 to 10 years before it aired HIMYM repeats on its channel, especially when HIMYM is currently airing on multiple channels already.
I'm excited to see Cobie's movie too. It looks good and the cast is awesome. I hate that too when movies aren't released at theaters in my area. Most likely this movie won't be released anywhere near me (I live in Wisconsin). Maybe I'll be able to see it sometime when I'm visiting my older brother and his family in Minnesota.
Slightly different topic. HIMYM posted on Twitter that they needed "our" help to take the lead for #best chemistry involving Ted and the Mother. OMG! You should seen the responses, not one was positive - it really was brutal (in a good way). More Delusion. On a far better note- can't wait to see "They Came Together" with Cobie!
Oh, I saw that. I did not lift a finger to help them. Best chemistry...but then she had to die because it's true to life. I'll have to go back and read the responses.
