I want any information about Ianto's family, especially as I haven't yet read any of the books. Rumors abound that Rhiannon and Johnny are Ianto's sister and brother-in-law and will appear in Children of Earth along with their kid/kids ( Read more... )

I heard a rumor awhile ago that someone's nephew got cast as Ianto's nephew. It didn't say much else other than that, but I think it said the boy was blond, and a cute little thing, and around eight-ten years old? Mind you, I'm not sure how much of that I made up, but that's what I seem to remember.

The novels are considered only semi-canon, but Ianto doesn't talk much about family in the novels except for The Twilight Streets, where he mentions "having a discussion with his mother about ABBA" when he was 14. Which Gwen interprets as his mother realizing he's bi.

The book The Torchwood Archives isn't a novel, but it is meant to be 100% canon. In that we learn that Ianto's mum lives in Newport. His father died in 2002 (he would've been 18 or 19, depending on time of year) and his sister Rhiannon is married to Johnny Evans and they have two kids (I believe one boy one girl, the book doesn't say but I know they've cast Ianto's nephew).

There's no other family info in the book, really. Though everything Jack said about Ianto in "Fragments" is true, as well.

The books aren't canon, so you don't have to have read them to write, if anyone considers the books canon/semi-canon that's their own interpretation, not the producers/BBC's

The books are approved by the Producers and the BBC. They come out from the BBC Books section. Steve Tribe is the man who does all the fact checking etc. The authors of the books have to submit their manuscripts to be checked over before they can be released.

The idea that they are not canon is from fandom.

There has been nothing from the Producers or the BBC stating they are not canon that I am aware of. If they were not canon then why do they have the BBC logo on them, why are they checked over?

The books contradict themselves and some episodes factually more than once: one example is one of the books (Skypoint) Gwen is talking about how they don't get paid enough to get a bigger place than her current... 2x02? she's talking about how she had to hide her sudden rise in income from Rhys, stuffing expensive new dresses behind the couch not to mention both Tosh and Owen obviously have more expensive places. And characterisation can be all over the place but you can consider that a matter of quality.

Because Torchwood is owned by the BBC products using the Torchwood characters and universe cannot be sold without their permission. People write, someone from the BBC checks that they are worth publishing, the BBC publishes them and get a nice hump of money for almost no inconvenience.

Honestly, knowing so little about his family, it's hard to write accurately. And it seems like th emore fic I read, the more I want to pick and choose for him.

Go with your gut on the Canon. Also, remember, dad was a master tailor and likes to go to the Electro with Ianto. And that would be just about all we really know about him. I mean, we haven't even seen his flat.

From everything that we've heard in the last few months - including producer Peter Bennet saying that we'll be learning about Ianto's family in series 3 and the book 'The Torchwood Archive' which is meant to be canon - it's virtually confirmed that Ianto has a sister named Rhiannon, who's being played by actress Katy Wix who has long dark hair. She's married to Johnny Evans (who we may have identified from filming pics as having short and fair curly hair) and they have 2 young children. They live in Newport, as does Ianto's mother. Father died in 2002.

Apparently someone taking part in a welsh choir several months ago :) heard on the grapevine that a cute looking blond haired boy had been cast to play Ianto's newphew - maybe taking after his father. No word on whether the other child is a boy or a girl, though a girl would be obvious.
