Asatru Code

May 21, 2009 08:54

The Asatru Code was developed as a way for Heathens to encode relevent information about themselves.  I first became aware of this code a few years back but never took the time to write out the code as it could be applied to describe myself and my practice of Heathenry.  Well, this morning I did do.

I thought it would be a quick and simple thing to ( Read more... )

"it's fun and good self-examination."Yeah, I did enjoy doing this and it really did make me think about some things I might not ordinarily think about ( ... )

You're welcome. Both of those groups seem a little "sleepy" right now. But, you know how it goes with Yahoo! Groups.

I found it very interesting to do, a good exercise in self-examination. I'm sure the code could easily be adapted to CR if one were inclined to take up the task.

"we seem too busy arguing all the time"

Oh, don't be mislead; we've got our fair share of that in the Heathen community, as well. It's unfortunate, but it's fact.

I'm really glad to see people are still using Inge's codes. Also that they've been updated and made more accurate. Here's mine.
A2 Al3 Am1 An5 B3 CAS Co5 Cr5(c5)(t4)(w4)(h4)P1 E3 F3 G5 HHR HMU IFS K3 L4 La3 M3 Mn4(f)(d)(t) N5 Na3 Or2(Geferraeden Fyrnsidu) P2 (Thunnor,Wayland) R2 Ru2 S3 T4 To3 W4

And it's a good thing I wrote down what it all means 'cause I've already forgot 75% of it. Good exercise though.

As I mentioned in my post, I've know about the Asatru Code for awhile. I don't know why I never bothered to write out my code before now. It really was a valuable exercise for me, and I'm glad I did it.

Is it perfect? No. As one example, the "E" variable measuring Eclecticism: there are a couple of non-Germanic deities I feel somewhat attracted to (Brighid, Ogma), though this attraction hasn't gone beyond that to worship. This would probably put me as "E4". However, if a guest at my symbel were to toast a non-Germanic deity he would mostly definitely NOT be invited back. On this I'm un-moving, so I graded myself as "E2," here.

So, while not perfect, it was definitely worthwile to do. I want to try to do this periodically (maybe every year, or every couple of years) to see what, if anything, might have changed.

I tried re-doing mine a year or two later (at Inge's insistence actually, after she'd incorporated my suggestions), but the only thing that had changed was the Ealdriht association had been replaced by founding HT :-)

I think it's hard to fit every shade and nuance in, especially since it's based on something where the variables have a definite "more is better" trend. But FWIW, there are gods and goddesses of other pantheons who strike me as interesting and/or likeable, but I worship only one lot, which I think is the important distinction. (But Chthulhu is a bad example for her to use, funny though it is--to my mind, worshipping a deity you know to be fictional, like Chthulhu or Crom, is a different thing, and not a betrayal. Inge didn't see that and in the age of the Jedi religion and the Flying Spaghetti Monster, she may be right.)

Mine sits in my profile :-)

Yes, I agree there is a fine line in some of the variable ratings, and I do see the "more is better" bias in many of them. For many of the variables I had to really think, then decide which rating MOST reflected my mind on the subject. I do think it was a good exercise to do.

I've learned since posting this that Yahoo! will be closing down all the old Geocities web sites. I don't know what will happen to this Asatru Code, if maybe Inge will moved it to another site, or not? I'd hate for it to be lost. Just in case, I've copied the entire thing to a MS Word document, just to have it preserved somewhere
