I am once again somewhat aware of the world.  It's been a tough couple of weeks.  For teachers, the worst weeks are the first three and the last three.  So, I have survived grading, cleaning the classroom, saying good-bye to students and colleagues, Then we had mass quantities of in-laws in town, and a big (17 person) photo shoot.  In all that, we ( Read more... )

Your description of lyrical dance is hilarious. I haven't heard of that style of dance before. In classical singing, lyrical means broad, lush melodies and great emotion, but it can be happy or sad or anything else in between.

The angst of teenage-hood feels so important and so real at the time, but looks so silly in the rearview mirror!

And John Keats for us poetic souls. Yes, I remember that my favorite music was overly-emotional stuff (Barry Manilow or Mahler, to be exact). I, too, would have danced around looking depressed if given half a chance. So nice of the dance school industry to provide an outlet.

That said, some of the dances were really well done - one in particular has stuck with me for its music, choreography, costumes, and how well the girls who danced it did. Like anything else, done well, it is gorgeous.

LMAO!! You nailed the description of Lyrical. It totally HAS turned into that!! It's actually supposed to be a beautiful cross between ballet and jazz, but today's dancers have gone waaay too modern with it (and I LOATHE modern dance, by-the-way). The shift in popular dance makes me kind of sad....It is no longer about having great training and technique, but rather how many tricks you can squeeze into a 2 minute number. Hip-Hop and Modern rule the roost. I miss the not-too-long-ago days of dancers being versatile and strong, not just doing leg and turn tricks. Anyway, I hope Anne had a good time performing. :) What type of dance did she do? What are her dance aspirations?

Anne is four. Her class is called combo, which is tap and ballet. It was hilarious when the older girl led the fourteen of them out onto the stage in their pink sparkly dresses. So cute. She has no passion - just likes to have fun. She likes to make up her own "dances" at home - they are a little weird, and rarely include music. So far, I don't see a prodigy, but as long as she has fun, I'm good. She's dancing at the fair tomorrow. I hope the older girls do tap or ballet and keep it light.
