It is possible to excel in high school (academically, socially, in sports or arts) and to still honestly be a normal, well-rounded person. There are people out there who, by high school, have matured to the point where they want to be outstanding simply to be outstanding.

I don't think Wootton puts too much pressure on people. I got an A in AP Lit, but I didn't take the AP exam. It's all up to the individual. And Wootton recognizes all sorts of accomplishments, not just those in the realm of academia.
