Ego surfing

Huh, apparently lots of people ego surf (i.e. google their own name). It's come up twice in the last day or so for me: Scalzi is giving it up for Lent, and a particular asshole on Twitter got (beautifully) mocked for it when he replied to someone who mentioned him by name but didn't @-tag him ( Read more... )

I google myself now and then to see what's out there, because I'm searching for a job and I'd like to know what potential employers would come across. Nothing salacious, thank heaven.

Yes, exactly. That was what prompted me to decide I MUST have a pseud for future publications. The one story that's out there is fairly unobjectionable (anyone who would object to the content is someone I wouldn't want to work with anyhow), but I doubt that will remain true for everything I might have published someday.

Not that I'm looking for another job, but life is uncertain, and it's a lot easier to keep things off the internet in the first place than to remove them once they're out there.

Up
